hi - yes i'm a newbie, and yes there's probably some really simple thing i'm not doing right...
...but having read numerous tutorials and forum posts all over the internet i can't establish what i'm doing wrong. basically, xbmc will not access my hard drive on my pc no matter what i do. i've tried editing smb settings, i've edited the .xml file, i've changed the settings *within* xbmc under smb server, i've tried using ccx to run a server on the pc - all to no avail.
i have a v1.0 xbox running an xecuter 2.6 chip with the x2_4972 bios (it was the only one i could get working on my v1.0). i'm using the evox dashboard and have followed tutorials to give my xbox a static ip and connect to my pc that way. i'm just using a windows xp pc sp2, linked to the internet through a cable modem on one nic and the xbox on the other.
i can ftp to the xbox no problem, and in fact when i launch the xbmc and the avalaunch dash they receive info from the internet through my pc as well. although the streamcast radio stuff doesn't seem to work...
i'm tearing my hair out here as i don't know what to do. i've read that the xbox should be able to see computers on the same network and automatically share their files but this doesn't seem to be happening with me.
the nearest i've got is xbmc asking for a username and password to access under smb - i don't usually use one on my xp but even with the guest account on and setting up an xbox profile especially for it (and either entering it when asked or putting it in the .xml file or in the xbmc network settings) it doesn't let me in.
can someone tell me a correct set of settings for the xbmc/network/smb share configuration? do i need to mess with these at all? if not, what are the defaults? i'm conscious that i i'm messing with 3 sets of settings but regardless of what i set them to it just doesn't get to my pc.
or if anyone has any ideas about problems with my network then i'd be pleased to hear them - as i said i can ftp so beyond that i've no idea.
my static ip addresses are
xbox - 192.168.1.3
pc - 192.168.1.2
default gateway for both - 192.168.1.1
aaargh - please help or point me to a forum thread that can (and i've been through a lot of them today!!!)
i'll love you all forever. i promise.
