View Full Version : networking woes
i had my box up and running and on the network.
now, no matter what i do i cannot get it to connect -- i have not changed any of the settings. i tried disconnecting my entire network (disconnecting all cables, resetting modem and router) and that did nothing.
the only thing i changed in my setup was hooking up a home theater receiver (i needed to move the xbox to put the receiver underneath).
i can't even look at the logs, since ftp obviously doesn't work.
i know this isn't specifically an xbmc-related question, but i thought some of the clever folks around here might have some suggestions.
my concern is that i have a bad ethernet port. any suggestions of what else i can try before tearing apart my box again would be greatly appreciated.
there's some other stuff i should probably mention.
the lights on the xbox ethernet port are on. solid green, amber flashing.
the lights for the appropriate lan port on my router are on and indicating activity. i cannot perform anything which requires the network on the xbox, and i cannot ping it from either of the other two machines on the network.
in the absence of an ability to check the logfile, i tried connecting to live for troubleshooting purposes. when i try the xbox dash network troubleshooter, or whatever its called, it tells me the cables are connected but that it cannot reach the gateway. i am certain my gateway ip (192.168.1.1) is correct and have confirmed this number on the two other networked machines.
also, my xbox is getting on my goddamn nerves. i rarely use it for gaming; it was supposed to be a media hub. so i'm really hoping somebody here had a similar problem and can help a brother out.
hi, i have my pc networked to my xbox as well, but when i change settings on my pc/network i always make it stop working and have to pull my hair out to try and make it work.
i don't know of a way to fix your problem, but i know of a way to check if your pc and xbox are even connected (i think) because i am not a network master, i have to play around with the settings, and discovered the following.
my pc is wirelessly connected to my router, i then use ics and a crossover cable to give my box internet and network shares. i then have to set up my settings on my pc lan connection (setting a static ip in the tcp/ip properties) and on my box. (sorry about the ramble, but stick with me) at some points i have inadvertantly assigned my xbox and lan connection the same ip address, this makes windows xp bring a pop up stating that 2 devices have the same ip address, but this would at least show the 2 were talking to eachother right?
sorry bout the length of the post, but hope this helps, if only a little.
grim.
that is interesting. i'd think it would prove that the two are at the very least aware of each other, meaning they'd both be connected in some way.
that seems to be the case with me as well. for instance, yesterday i had this weird thing where my xbox could check the weather. this got me excited, thinking it had finally come to its senses.
nope. no other network activities worked, and after a reboot, the weather wouldn't load again either. grrrr.
it's interesting that this thread has received so many views and only the one response. like i said, i am aware that this is not an xbmc question. if people just have no idea, i'd be interested in hearing that as well.
besides, it's my birthday. humor me.
hahahahahaha.
just booted up my xbox to check on things and it's working perfectly now.
completely at random. i did nothing.
well, the power did go out briefly yesterday. i wonder if that had anything to do with it.
i take it back -- it works sometimes.
after a reboot, it seems there' about a 50/50 chance of it seeing the network.
urg.
for anyone who's interested or who can shed some light on the subject:
i found a "fix" over the weekend for this problem.
i was doing some electrical work in a room adjacent to the rooms with my xbox, computer, and networking stuff in them. the power to the electrical box i was rewiring was on the same circuit as all of these items. the project ended up taking a bit longer than expected, but when i turned to power back on and booted everything up, the xbox was on the network and working flawlessly.
so, my question is this: does the xbox have some kind of reset mechanism when being completely removed from power for an extended period of time? all of the other items had been power cycled previously many times in an effort to fix the issue, so that seems to be the only variable, aside from the length of time i left things unplugged for.
thanks!
that actually sounds a bit more like emi on the network cable going to the xbox (assuming you use a cable and not wireless). is the cable anywhere near any other electrical wiring or equipment?
ah, i hadn't thought of that!
the cable runs through a wall which contains some electrical wiring.
however, since the power was off and subsequently turned back on (the ethernet cable was not moved), i've had zero problems.
is there an easy way to check for emi?
if you've had no problems since the power coming back on, then maybe it was some type of reset.
the easiest way to check for emi is to have the device continually doing something on the wire (like have the xbox playing something from a share) and then turn on and off all of the lights or other devices that could be on the same circuit or could have higher powered wiring (ac electrical, speaker wire, etc.) running close and parallel to the ethernet cable. if there's interferrence from any of the other devices, you should notice the stream stopping and trying to rebuffer.
in all the electrical i've done, i've seen this kind of thing quite a bit. people report that something sporadically stops working, and it turns out that the ethernet cable was run over a flourescent light or something like that. works when the light is off, but stops working as soon as it's turned on. you'd also be amazed at how much noise a microwave or vacuum cleaner can introduce on an ac ciruit, which can then further affect improperly filtered devices.
