hi guys,
so we cant run xbmc as a samba server - accepted - no problem!
i was wondering about gnump3d http://www.gnu.org/software/gnump3d
and whether that can be integrated / ported into the system ?
we have a cool webpage that permits us to browse our content and switch tracks remotely but it would be nice to access my mp3's whilst i am in work, or indeed on a pc in another room that would negate the need for a samba share
is this feasible ? sorry if its allready been suggested, i did a high level trawl of the forum topics but theres too much there to review the lot ! a search for gnump3d didnt produce any hits either - hence this post
regards

a gnump3d server has not been suggested/requested before you did however many other streaming servers have been suggested, like;
shoutcast/icecast server (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st&f=4&t=9287), upnp media-server (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=4;t=4997), daap server (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=4;t=14963), jinzora stream-server (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=4;t=15821), and my personal preference a xbmsp (or xns) server (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=4;t=1219)

i agree with gamester17 since using xbmc i have tried so many different streaming methods, and i now hate smb and think my xbmsp (or xns) server is amazing.

i'm not fan of smb filesharing other than its a quick and very dirty way of shunting data very inefficiently around a network
;-)
that said i don't know enough about xbmsp yet. the advantages i saw for gnump3d were :
it is an open source , mature product and appears to be reasonably portable.
the resultant streams can be listened to on almost any pc with the default media players (a must for me since our works laptops are locked down)
i dont want to go down the route of storing my mp3 / movie collection elsewhere as i spend a lot of time stuck in hotel bedrooms work-wise, so some times i want to carry my media around with me (400gb hdd fitted). similarly though , when working at "the office" i'd love to be able to access my media remotely via http as http transport is firewall friendly
excuse my newbile ignorance, but can xbsmp deliver this ? if it can - it gets my vote - if i need to install it onto my client devices ...well...<<sharp intake of breath between clenched teeth>> its a bit of a no no really
thoughts ??

well gnump3d is basicly a very basic http engine? am i right? someone very rescently has added the idea for improving the already existing http engine to include access to places above the web folder in xbmc, if this does happen then alot of what you want you can do with that i think.

this might be the answer to two posts ill ask that it be linked if it works, not tested it yet, webserver.cpp (http://ccgi.eleclan.co.uk/screens/webserver.cpp) (incase anyone had tried this before 17:45 gmt i have fix a error i found when compiling)
it allows drive to be accessed via:
http://xboxip/drivec
http://xboxip/drived
http://xboxip/drivee
http://xboxip/drivef
http://xboxip/driveg
it should work but i havnt tried it yet im at work and don't have any of my stuff here.
edit:
ask for in this forum link:
web server enhancements/improvements (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=4;t=1243;st=45)

excuse my newbile ignorance, but can xbsmp deliver this ? if it can *- it gets my vote *- if i need to install it onto my client devicesxbmsp would need a client (or plug-in for your player) on each device, ...so would a shoutcast/icecast server however most software players also have a built-in shoutcast and/icecast client, (like ex. winamp has)

xbmsp is good though since you could do xbox to xbox, and xbox to pc very easierly once a pc client is developed to its full ability.
plus it seems to run so much smoothly compaired to smb. with smb it can be working one min and the next just cut out, even on pc to pc.
