i actually already figured out the solution to my problem, but figured i'd post it here in case anyone else is having this issue.
i used to be able to play videos in 1080i mode fine, but since i updated sometime in december, they usually just try to start and fail without any errors. today i decided to do some searching to try to solve it and succeeded :)
the problem seems to be that i was running out of memory. i guess that in 1080i mode, the ui is taking up enough memory that not enough was left over to cache and play the video. i dropped my cache size to 4096 (from 8192) and voila, it worked!
btw, i found this out because i discovered the beauty of the debug logging. out of curiosity, am i ok to just leave my log level at debug all the time or will this cause some performance issues or other problems? so far it seems alright.
