View Full Version : internet tv streams
i rencently got into streaming video
using guides from here
great work for this feature and i managed to get nasa tv to work
but xbmc will cut out after like 5 minutes or sometimes can last longer or shorter ,back to files selection like it looses contact or something
is this a bug?
i had something similar until i realized that i was running xbmc without the appropriate codec package to download from mplayer website: see in your xbmc\mplayer\codec dir
hope it will help

downloaded them codecs did'nt make any difference

i noticed the same thing if i have something else downloading/uploading to then internet on same network (like peer2peer http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif )
actually i did notice that a p2p program running does affect the quality of tv streaming.
it's amazing how those file sharing programs can repeatedly monopolize your cpu. check with ctrl alt supr and u'll see that cpu goes up to 95-100 % every 30 sec or min, no matter how fast/recent your pc is. and while this cpu peak happens u can be sure that your streaming (both on pc and / or xbox) will slightly freeze and sound could even be cut off for a sec or 2.
it does not seem to be connected to internet bandwidth as i have 2 mbit/sec adsl and hardly saturate it...
so i am afraid that indeed p2p prgrams do not facilitate smooth tv streaming.
the skid : 2 be sure that this is the reason of your pb, maybe retry streaming tv without p2p. and maybe send me the stream adresses so that i test them.

heres the stream address if u could tet it
thanks

how does this affect xbox - you aren't running p2p on xbox are you?
the skid : i checked your nasa stream this morning for 30minutes and i had absolutely no problem, no freeze frame, no cut out at least for the xbox :-) cause i was running in parallel on my pc with wmp ( to do some kind of side by side comparison :-)) and guess what : wmp lost the video stream after 4-5 minutes but it was able to catch it back afterwards... it's not the 1st time i notice xbmc is a better streamer than my pc ! well done xbmc !!!
so in conclusion i guess you'll have to update your xbmc. i believe that the developpers have made significant improvement with this streaming application quite recently.
personnally i am running today's cvs dated 1.03.2004.
answer to thebeast : no i am not running p2p on xbox. is it feasible? what would be the interest ? (conflicts with game running, not enough cpu, xbox not built to support never being turned off, etc.)
to fully answer thebeast, i noticed while my p2p program was not well configured on my pc (too many sources per download) that it could use a lot of my pc cpu which clould result to simulataneous freeze frames on the xbox while streaming internet tv. now that the p2p program is better configurated this stuff seems settled. however i would not be surprised to have it back sometime...

this is the part that interests me: "that it could use a lot of my pc cpu which clould result to simulataneous freeze frames on the xbox while streaming internet tv"
what does it mean?
- are you streaming internet tv from your pc to your xbox?
- or, is your home lan fully occupied by the pc doing p2p?
- (lots of speculations)...
i don't get it, please explain, now i'm really curious :d

setting the cache sizes helps for these kinds of problems.
initially mplayer will use the audio buffer size. then when it has buffered 20% of that it will start playing.
when it detects a video stream then it will switch from audio buffer size to video buffer size.
so you can imagine that when you set audio buffer to 256 and video to 2048 and your line is pretty busy with p2p that the initial 20% of 256 is too little.
