i bought a buffalo linkstation and i am very disappointed by the loud fan and the loud noise when accessing the hdd.

i searched already the yahoo linkstation group and linkstationwiki. i already installed the openlink firmware, but the users there have written their own scripts for taking the fan in low mode, and i am absolutely a linux noob.
i tried some user scripts, spent several hours to learn how to setup the scripts and finally i got really frustrated of all the linux hacking .. i just want it to work out of the box!

additionally to the loudness of the fan the hdd makes some strange noise every 5-10 mins, also when i am not accessing the hdd!
i don't know why the hdd makes this noise every 5-10 mins.

so, do you guys know another cool nas device, which is really silent (as it will be running several hours a day) and which is working with xbmc ?

thanks for your feedback in advance.

scape,

don't know if it works with xbmc but the synology disk station 101j [10/100mb / ide drive ] is a fanless design but not the g+ which is the sata gigabit system with a noisy fan. i've been looking at this for a while but can't decide if it will work with xbmc. its approx £280 with a 250gig ide hd.

drongo, thanks for the tip. that nas looks great and the specifications also look good.
i also found that link for the ds-101 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/ds101/homepage

i don't know if you also can install xlink or a ctorrent client on that nas system yet? .. not bad ..

i also know the western digital netcenter is fanless and also the plextor nas device is fanless. but i don't know if they are working with xbmc ..

try the simpletech simpleshare drives. they are fanless, size of an external hard drive and work with xbmc. :)

no offense, but you really don't want to be running any 7200rpm drive out on the market today without some sort of a fan in any enclosure (unless it is liquid cooled...grin).

i'm really surprised you guys are concerned with fan noise, given these should be able to be put in your closet with your router, since it is a network drive...hell, put it where ever you want with network connection. *anyway, as for the intermittant drive noise, you really want a nas device that also supports drive spool down, in a home environment. *seriously, 90% of the time, you aren't going to be needing to access the drive in a home environment.

a good/cheap nas enclosure i've found is by coolmax at: *http://www.coolerstar.com/coneen.html (http://www.coolerstar.com/coneen.html) newegg has it for $69, and you put whatever drive you want in it (not sata, too bad, and only 100mb, but not bad). *i'm thinking this is a better option even than putting a big hdd in each xbox (now if you could only play the games from the network drive).

i use buffalo terastation with lots of gbytes for my media. it is not fanless, but i never heard it. it's quite big and turning slowly.

before using the nas, test the character settings. i came across some problems with xbmc and umlauts.

also, you can hack the os and log in as root so you can install custom software to the nas like the mentioned torrent client.
