i wanted to buy a nas storage device and have tried the buffalo linktation. the fan of the linkstation for me is too loud, and thus it is not usable for me, because i want silence. *:)

now i thought of upgrading my xbox hdd to a 300gb one.
that would be the easiest option to store my media collection.

but now an important point comes:
how to backup the data on my 300gb xbox hdd ??

sure, first i could make a normal backup using "nero backitup" on my pc and after that, transfer all my media files to the xbox. thats fine.

but what am i doing after a period of time, when i have added more media to my xbox hdd?? i want to incrementally backup the data not the whole data to backup again and waste all my dvd recordables!
i want to backup just the newly added media that i don't have already in my previous backup.

how can i do that for the hdd in my xbox?

are there some tools, that can do incremental backup over ftp ?
then i could use that program from my pc, access the xbox via ftp and do an incremental backup from the xbox hdd.

is there a solution for this and how do you guys backup your data on your xbox hdd ?

last option would be to upgrade my pc hdd and then stream the media from the pc (and do the backups from my pc), but i am trying to avoid using the pc only for streaming, as it consumes to much power.

or do you guys know some nice nas devices which are really silent and working with xbmc ?

xbmc has many filesystem limitations

4096 files/folders per directory
48 character filename
2gb (iirc) file sizes

many people encouter issues with these limitations (especially the filename)
i would suggest a more silent nas solution or simply put the hdd in a pc and play the audio/video over the network
