View Full Version : HOW-TO stream Live-TV from PC with DVB-S
here is a small tutorial of how to watch satellite channels from a dvb card on your xbox.
first of all you need a dvb card propertly installed in your computer as well as it works with my theater software
i'll use this site for the things you need: http://www.your-offers.net/
of course these files can be found all over the net.
i use this version mytheatre ver. 2.76 but it works with any other.
1.download my theater and make it work so you can see the *channels on your pc.
2.download this plugin avbroadcast 0.11
3.put the .dll file in the plugins subdir of my theater and restart it
4.press ctrl+alt+b and enable xns server
5.configure you xbox to the ip of your pc and port 1400
- for me it worked best with last xbmc cvs build from 12.2.2004
- for streaming other files from pc's hdd use smb !
6.go in your xns in videos in xbmc and you should be able to see one .mpg file with size of 0.1k
7.run it and watch :)
i want to say my big thanks to the guy that made this plugin for my theater, i was looking long time for something like this and only found tsreader witch is not free and cannot decode channels using yankse plugin...
feature needs in this plugin:
1.to be able to control the channels from the xbox.
2.to be able to stream the whole transponder, so you can watch all the channels on it.
3.may be to become a standalone program using only dvbcore, just for sreaming, not to watch on pc.
if these features come true, the xbox will become partly a dreambox satellite reciever witch will make it even more useful then ever.

doesn't look at first sight like mytheater supports dvb-t cards such as the nebula digitv card.. only dvb-s
is that a correct assumption?

it's a nebula digitv pci card and comes with it's own software... very good compared to the hauppauge cards website here (http://www.nebula-electronics.com)
i couldn't find it...
but if the card is initialized by my theater, the only thing you need to do is to change your lnb settings, because for terrestrial the frequency is much lower and to try to scan some channels.
excuse my ignorance of dvb cards, but i'm really interested in this.
can this setup be used to watch sky digital channels (i.e. the uk satellite broadcaster)? would this require the dvb card to have a conditional access module (cam) to take the sky card, or does the software take care of the decryption (in a dubiously legal but morally acceptable way)?

yes it can decode chanel, same way as mytheater. also a little more stable in streaming then mt xns pluging.

i just got latest avbroadcaster010 (running on latest mytheatre). i tryed to stream to latest xbmc (2004-03-09). i can watch stream just for less than 10 seconds. after that image becomes blocky and audio gets all messed up...
pc is connected to xbox through a 10/100 network (both hub and pc network interface).
any hint?
i even tried to get old avbroadcaster008a but i couldn't find it anywhere. do you have a working link to get it?

you need some of the new versions of xbmc to use its cache abilities because avbroadcast plugin is not very well made (my opinion) and is sending too much information in abou 5mb/s which the xbox cannot read on the fly...
but with cache versions it's working very fine

ok a so i have been trying various old cvs builds trying to get one to work with the new avbroadcast 0.12 plugin for my theater as described in "dvb - xns - xbox" thread. i had little or no luck. bad playback problems with most builds and crashing in the current cvs due to xns issues.
another feature of avbroadcast plug in is http broadcast. i setup mytheater as described here (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=8;t=1898) but instead of xns i enabled http/rstp broadcast.
i created a file called "dvb stream.strm" and opened in notepad pasted "http://192.168.0.100:8000/dvbcore.mpg" of course replace the ip address with the ip of your computer. save and upload to the xbox audio folder or your audio share(like you would internet streaming files). open the file and it will buffer for a second then start playing.
i still have to change the channel on my computer but otherwise the streaming works great and video looks perfect.
i am working on a python script to change the channels through the http interface avbroadcast uses.
hope this might help out other dvb users who like to keep up to date on the cvs since xns is currently broken.

what xbmc build have you successfully working avbroadcast through xns?
if you read my other thread (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=8;t=3945) i have a setup working with avbroadcast without using xns so it works in the current cvs builds.

umm version 0.12 of avbroadcast
in my previous post there is a url for a website that has the version 0.12. go download it. it will show your favorates as you have them setup in mythreater and you can change between them easily.

i've installed avbroadcaster 0.12. now when i start mytheatre i have avb set to always broadcast. i turn my xbox on and goto xbmc then proceed to my xns share i see some items there ie music (1) tv favs (6) radio (4) etc. so if i go into any of those folders it takes anywhere from 5 - 15 minutes before xbmc does anything then there are some .mpg files with a filesize of 0.1mb. now previous versions of avb that is normal just select it and press (a) and start watching tv. this is not the case it does nothing no matter how long i wait. note during the time it takes to retrieve these files which are only about 6 of them. mytheatre reports that there is a remote channel change, to me that seems fine. my question is this. the items that i first see are not what i have in my favorites. do i need to setup some type of channel list in order for this to work ?

avbroadcaster stream does not work for me
this what i have: xbmc april09/04,
mytheatre 3.08
avb 0.11
the "dvb stream.strm" created on local xbox drive.
i can start mt, select avb and select port:1400, thought can not change multicast address.
if "dvb stream" selected from xbmc menu there are some quick messages displayed and than nothing.
i can say that i can stream using tsreader from same pc.
or use smb to play some video clips.
what am i missing with avb?

reading on 10 different forums figured out that avb 1.2 works best with http but to support http one must use latest xbmc

next chalange is python: it runs on xbox but displays empty screen. i changed list_url= "http://192.168.0.250:8000/xmltv/listing.xml to

thats all you need to do in the script
(i assume 192.168.0.250 is the ip of the pc running mytheatre) :)

if you reference the tvguid, that this is how that line looks like in my script now, (the ip is for pc running mt)

given that mt is running, i can use epg on mt pc, i can stream video to xbox, when i start tvguide script i have only black screen with correct date and time on it.

the script you need to change channel is mytheatre.py
on the upload/download site click 'xbmc python' then 'scripts' (or use the quickjump). this shows all the available downloads including mytheatre.py

ok, thanks everyone, streaming for regular programs works ok now
next challenge is to stream hdtv.
using mt and avb i'm getting very heavy pixelazation and freezes.

i've found the python script for myteathre, but since 2 day ago, it worked, but in these days i've changed something (i don't remeber) and the script myteathre.py for switch channel don't work. :(

hmm, not sure what im doing wrong, but i cant seem to get it to work with avbroadcaster 0.10 and latest xbmc.
with avbroadcaster 0.12 once i go to the shared folder, it keeps giving "remote channel change" and after about a minute, i get some list with the channels, but none plays.
with 0.10 i get the current channel but it doesnt play ...
any hints ?

i think xns is not workable in xbmc, try using avbroadcaster 1.2 in 'html' server mod.
you can make a shortcut in xbmc video section and put this in :
"http:\\server.ip:5000\dvbcore.mpg" and save it as .strm

i just installed xbox media center 2005-08-03, from the auto install 2.11 package, and i am using avbroadcaster 0.12 to try and stream video from mytheatre 3.25 to xbmc. i can get everything set up, but when i get to the caching dialogue, xbmc just freezes. i have tried using html, udp ports, but neither seems to work.
any ideas of what i should try?
i can share files from my pc to the xbox ok, so i don't think that i am having network problems. everything is connected through a router, and all systems are on the same subnet.

well, after several months of trial and error attempts to put mytheatre+avbroadcast+xbmc combo working i think i finally reach a veredict.
none of the the solutions i found in any forum was 100% operational and because there are still people asking for this, here's the solution i came up.
i used xbmc build from 12-2005 (or after), mytheatre 3.33.xx, avb 0.131 (changed by myself and may be found at
mytheatres.py 1.131 (http://sire.estig.ipb.pt/~exp/xbmc/mytheatres.py)) and finally vlc 0.8.2.
activate avb in mytheatre and choose the options marked in the following picture:

edit mytheatres.py with notepad and change url and urlview variables to reflect the ip of your pc running mytheatre. the port number (8000) in 2 (green numbers) should be the same in the the url variable in mytheatres.py. the urlview port (7000) will be used soon. put it in the xbmc scripts directory.

now execute vlc and open a network stream and set udp/rtp with same port number of number 1 in the picture (5000), mark output stream and caching with 4096. now press configurations and mark http with same address of the machine you're running vlc and use same port number as urlview of mytheatres.py (7000).
press ok twice and run mytheatres.py in your xbox.
btw, you can get avb at http://www.seanster.com/avb/

exp - i like it. runs stable as long as no one changes the channel from mt. i've been pouring through the vlc docs looking for a command line or config syntax to start vlc each time with the settings you outlined. have you discovered a way to do this?
sam2000, that's right you can't change the channel from mt, but anyway, what's the point doing that :)
about the command line for vlc it is quite simple:
vlc.exe udp://@:5000 :udp-caching=4096 :sout=#duplicate{dst=std{access=http,mux=ts,url=19 2.168.1.2:7000}}
you just have to adjust the ip and port numbers.
the easiest way to achieve this is to create a shortcut for vlc and adjust the target in the properties windows.

thanks for the command line parameters. *i actually tried that command line (with my particulars) but when i checked the gui & saw it wasn't populated as expected, i thought it failed. *obviously i should have tested it instead of assumming the gui would show it's present running state.
can you suggest a way to setup xbmc to run the mytheatres.py script by default on load?

so, is it working? i still have some little problems with mt cpu heavy usage. still couldn't figure it out. but concerning dvb streaming this is the best solution i could find (with less jitter and crashes).
to load mytheatres.py by default you just have to edit autoexec.py and add something like
xbmc.executescript('q:\\scripts\\mytheatres.py')
don't know if that's what you want, btw i made a slight change in
project mayhem iii skin so i can execute mytheatres.py with a button. i can publish a link here if you want.

yes it's working, & via a 802.11g nic in the mt-htpc too. *seems to use little memory & cpu on standard definition. *surprisingly little bandwidth too. *don't have hd to even try. *biggest problem is when a family member changes the channel from mt. *
regarding mt itself, sometimes our epg database becomes corrupt & mt becomes unstable. when it does, i reboot to let a batch file i setup replace the db with a virgin version of the db. *then relaunch mt & go to ch 100 or 303 to fill the epg database again & we're good for a week or so.
i had no luck with the autoexec.py i created & placed in the xbmc root, so if you don't mind publishing your skin i'll try that next.

yeah, i have 802.11g too and works pretty fine.
the changed skin i told you works only for pal 16x9 :( i didn't change the other standards. if you have pal 16x9 get this file (http://sire.estig.ipb.pt/~exp/xbmc/projectmayhemiii.zip) and unzip it in the skin dir. it's better to backup the old skin.
consider trying autoexec.py once again. put it in <xbmc dir>/scripts not in xbmc root dir.

placing autoexec.py in the scripts directory did the trick & it works as expected, thank you. no, not using pal here in the states. i guess you're in portugal? your english is great.
i notice i seem to have an issue with buffering from time to time on startup. when the video begins streaming, the top right corner shows a buffer bar that doesn't advance nor disappear until i bump the right joystick. a minor inconvienience. perhaps i should play with the buffer settings.

yep, i'm in portugal alright. and my english is not what it seems :) not the same as our mother language. try the changed skin anyway. it might work if you have 16x9 even though with ntsc.
there is in fact an initial jitter but it disappears after 5 or 10 seconds. buffering issues happen time to time, nothing serious. either i wait 2 or 3 seconds or press pause twice. maybe your wifi signal is weak...
in xbmc i use a 4096 kb buffer for unknown internet sources (the one used for http connections like this one). you'll notice a considerable lag between the pc and tv. the worst thing it might happen is to have the people watching the pc cheering a soccer goal while those on the tv are still waiting for the free kick.lol.

i tried your vlc streaming method and it worked very well. *i decided to update another version of the script i have been working on to include it. this script also has some extra features like an osd now-next bar and and you can change the settings in the gui (thanks to van der phunck).

congratulations! mytheatre script version 3.0 is really cool. lots of useful stuff. and thanks for the credits on version 3.1.
i tried it and worked very well. for now on i will use your script. yet i'm not able to read the stream directly from avbroadcast. after 10 seconds or so the stream is cut off. don't know why. still if i use vlc method everything goes alright. does anyone have these problems. or is it just me :hmm:

thanks. i had the problem of the stream cutting off from some channels, especially on hispasat, when using avbroadcast directly. for me turning the cache (video internet) down to 256k solved the issue. no idea why it should work but it did.
does anyone know if the xbox script "mytheatrexbmc3.1" works with the new "my theater" versions?
i cant get it to work.. but i´m a newbie.. so i might do it wrong.

does anybody else run this using a hdtv at 1080i
the menu is about 1/4 the size and pushed over to
the left. if i run it at 480p the menu is centered and
sized correct.
i think its a problem with the script but i'm not sure ?

and all is well using the above files from marplar

pixelation using xbmc..via mytheatre
my system
p4 3.2ghz 1gig ram xp pro 7200rpm drive
wired network 100mb
things i've tried to eliminate or reduce it.
1.\switching routers
2.\setting up ram disk in xp and placing mytheatre buffer on it.
3.\placing buffer on another hardrive
4.\switching codecs
the pixelation is usually at the start but can be quite random
and severe....any body have any other suggestions. different codecs seem to help.

Hi,
i'm running a Nexus-S with a plug-in to broadcast the feed. And from my xbox i created a file which point to my pc with the broadcast. At first the buffer do it's job but after 2 second it pause. I push the play button and it freeze again after 2 seconds. What settings am i missing here?
Any help would be appreciated!

Glad some people have had some success with this and it's encouraging.
Currently I use ALT-DVB (Freeware) as my DVB-S viewing application and am able to STREAM across my LAN network and change channels from different PC's

What I would like to know is MYTHEATRE the only program that will work with XBMC to stream ??
If so, could the members who have managed to get this up and running successfully please provide some detailed instructions for members like me to try this out, as MyTheatre is a commerical product and I would like to know that it works fully.
