HOW-TO setup streaming internet video/audio

after some help from the guys in #xbmc (efnet) i got video streaming working and thought it would be nice to post a little how to and start putting together a list of good tv streams.

just a general note first, streaming video must be accessed through my music at the moment, i don't know why, dont ask me :)

1) check you have the .strm file format included in your xboxmediacenter.xml file:

check the <musicextensions> tag (yes music) for .strm and if it doesn't exist, add |.strm to the end of the list in the same way as the others that are there already.

2) put together a strm file:
stream files end in .strm but are just text files. in notepad enter the following and save it as researchchannel.strm or something similar:

mms://media-wm.cac.washington.edu/researchtv live

3) copy that file to somewhere that is accessable in my music and open it:
this might be a samba share or the xbox hard disk, where every your music is. then go to my music and navigate to your newly created file and select it. streaming might take a while to start and is unstable for some streams so you'll just have to play around.

putting the url only in the file is enough.
so in your example putting :
mms://media-wm.cac.washington.edu/researchtv live (lan)

in the .strm file is enough.
so just 1 line with the url.

xbmc is the coolest thing i know today.

here are some posting guidelines, to add your list of streams (followup comments), i hope we can agree on, and confirm somewhat too.

these guidelines, i just throw up, can be changed, if you can point at a good reason for changing:

first rule: make seperate sections for radio and tv, please.

second rule: please specify in this order:
- channel name
- stream type
- url
- bandwidth use of stream (minimum/preferred)
- bandwidth you have on your connection
- quality (lag, no lag, no connection, n/a if you didn't test yet)
- location of you the client (country)
- summary of stream (so people don't watch what they don't like, this should be at least a 1-liner description)
- language of stream (not nationality, but language spoken)

note: this thread is only for listing stations, and not for comming with suggestions to changed guidelines.

third rule: please write your reason for changing guidelines here:
- on irc
- personal message through forum (i'm reasonable)
- or in the thread here:

so i've tried a few that don't work, like:

- orf ö1 (austrian radio channel 1)
- all asx, asf, those starting with mms

but:
- it's amazing that the research channel works.
- and supposedly some quicktime trailers run.

now i'm going to look again and for those ogg vorbis streams.

ok i think this is the coolest feature yet!
but i'm having a problem understanding exactly what streams i can use.
the research channel works great and is a good demonstration of the technology but is a totally lame stream.

so heres what ive been trying to do but its not working.

pick a stream from netbroadcaster.com.

when the video window pops up...drag and drop the internet explorer icon from the window to my desktop.

right click on the icon. go to properties and copy the url.

put the url in my address bar and put the "view-source" command before the http in the url.

hit enter and i get notepad with a bunch of html. *i wade through that to find the stream url and get.....

then i set up my little .strm file with note pad..

i really think this web tv function is super cool and trully enhances the multimedia abilities of xbmc.

for those who are intersted here is a little package of tv streams that are operational with xbmc. unfortunately a lot of tv streams found on the web do work properly on pc but tend to hang up xbox. so with this package you should find only working channels.

i do not know how to insert a file in this forum so here is a link to a forum of a cool french web site where you can find the package. the file is called stream tv.rar and is located in a message written by ludo on 19-02-2004, 18:35.

ive been trying to get a radio station stream working as you suggested but when i select the .strm file i want to play it does nothing.
the url that windows media player uses is http://audio.musicradio.com/gold.asx

we could host as such page on our website/s and code xbmc interface if someone first writes a scripts, my asp skills are next to nothing
a script for people to upload strm's with comments and sort by name, catagory, language, date tested, etc. be nice

question though, say you have 10 streams, could you enter all ten under file1, file2, file3, etc. and numberofentries=10. then using the skip forward\backwards button would it naviagte through the streams?

i'm not sure (yet), but that will be usefull for some .asx that contain more links that have to be played in order, perhaps.

please ignore this 'false' bug report as i wrote it while i had not uploaded the win32 codec package from mplayer and this is why i had so many bugs...

so to all having troubles with their streams : make sure you have uploaded the codecs in the appropriate dir :-)

here is a copy of a 'bug report' already posted on source forge and linked to tv streaming

with 12.02.2004 build we had identified that some
streams worked (their name start with -- in the
package you can find on www.gueux.net) and the others would tend to hang up the xbox.

with latest build from today 27.02.2004, it seems to be
nearly the opposite : those streams that were buggy
(without --, for example wam tv from gb or zdf from
germany) now are watchable, wherease the previous
ones that worked (starting with --) now mostly (i
haven't tested all of them) hang up the xbox. funny
part is that those that worked initially (take vpro or viva
from germany) now are initiated with sound only (like a
radio stream) and when you stop them the xbox would
hang up after 15-20 sec. god (and the devs know
why :-))

i hope this is clear

and good luck + congratulations to the team for this
new amazing streaming tool. i did some side by side
testing and xbmc seem to get better streaming results
(keeping the stream) that my standard pc :-)

we now have hundreads of tv streams brilliantly working on the xbox. actually the result of our testing *(and we've been through more than 250 tv streams) show that all streams that are well handled by a pc with wmp can be viewed with xbmc if properly configured.

i just list below a few hints to obtain best streaming results :
1/ install xbmc as a dashboard
2/ fill the ip settings with your appropriate ips at the beginning of xboxmediacenter.xml
3/ set the sound output to analog mode. i don't know why but some audio streams would become quite ugly when output is set to digital (even if you have a full codec suite). check this stream to be convinced : mms://media2.omroep.nl/vpro3voor12tv2
4/ thick the video post-processing filter. some streams like the nasa one have the video scrambled and can be viewed with this filter. mms://wmbcast.nasa-global.speedera.net/wmbcast.nasa-global/wmbcast_nasa-global_jan212004_1021_53608
5/ to be 100% sure, get all the codecs as it is well explained in the readme.txt file located in your xbmc\mplayer\codecs\ dir

by doing all that you should have a great time streaming tv.

there is an extensive package of tv streams already prepared for xbox (all dir named ok sur 1.3 contain streams that were cheked 'viewable' last night). go here

ok, just got into this web tv streaming stuff, mainly cuz my gfs parents are korean and cant get any good tv out here. my question is: how do i find the url needed for something like comedy central? they stream, and i see sites that list it, but they dont list the url that id need to make the .strm file. any insight is appreciated.

i need to tweak the cache files abit cuz the damned korean servers are causing mad slowdown.

finishes and nothing happens.

xbox works fine in lan but it doesn't play file outside the lan .

ex1:xbox: 192.168.0.3 pc:192.168.0.1
i can play the stream http://192.168.0.1:2000/1.asf

ex2:when i play this http://192.168.10.21:2000/tv.asf,the stream server is in different lan section.xbox must visit it through gateway(192.168.0.1).i'm sure xbox is properly set and i can play it on my pc. xbmc just runs through some dialogues.it could be found in log file that "cmplayer::openfile() http://192.168.10.21:2000/tv.asf failed."

i use ethereal (a sniffer software)looking for some clue, in ex1 i could see packets run betweed xbox and stream server ,but in ex2 there is no packet sent from xbox.that means it doesn't even try to connect to 192.168.10.21.

so, is there a problem inside mplayer?does anyone get the same problem?

carlito - thanks, i did sort this on coolstreaming myself, but just couldn't get pplive to work which is ashame as it is significantly superior quality on my computer! hopefully there will be some xbmc that can play it soon then.

ok, just tried it with the latest xbmc i can find and it get as far as buffering it to 18.75% and then briefly flashes up that it can not play it because of no audio stream (though it plays fine on my computer) - so guess its missing a codec of some sort; but don't know which one or how to sort that...
