wow pplive stuff to xbmc would be nice lots channels
more info here
http://www5.pplive.com/english/index.shtml
i've got coolstreaming to work in that way but the pplive quality is way superior to coolstreaming at the moment.
guess we're stuck till the format is supported...has anyone tried with the latest release of xbmc?
(window$ media player lists pplive format as: video-windows media video 9, audio-windows media audio 940 kbps, 32 khz, stereo (a/v) 1-pass cbr)
if pplive streaming was working then it would probably be the best "drop dead amazing" feature i have seen in all the years since xbmp/xbmc started!!!!!
yes... thou windows media isn't mpeg ps..
i tried it with mplayer on windows, and it does the same weird thing.. caches up to about 16% then just either shutsdown or stall.. no idea what's going on.
okey, it can't detect what demuxer it should use.. something weird with the stream it generates

hi all.
i've been using pplive to watch streams on my pc but i'm having trouble getting it to stream to the xbox. *the streams i watch are in .asf and i'm trying to use videolan to stream them to the xbox but videolan wont play them (not valid file). *i only use pplive to watch football so i was wondering if there was a way of capturing the stream and then convert and stream to xbmc on the fly(i think this is what videolan does) without to much time delay?
ps:newbie here so go easy on me if i'm writing rubbish
pps:xbmc rocks:kickass:
bluenose247, some programs (including mplayer) cannot play the output of pplive...this is the whole problem.
anyone read chinese? theres a bit in the pplive faq that talks about 127.0.0.1: 3015, but i the google translation below makes little sense to me...i might try to e-mail the developers!!
"(6) i think the pplive broadcast some programs are very good, wants to transcribe it the computer comes up, may?
answer: the user may use some flows media transcribing software, downloads this machine 127.0.0.1: 3015. this method not passes through the test, does not guarantee effectively."

i've managed to get this working by using a program called getasfstream to record the stream for a minute then use ccxgui to stream it to xbmc and it plays ok its just a shame you cant fast forward or rewind it (be great for the football). all youve got to do then is delete the recording. its a bit long winded but it works for me.
ps: its looks a lot better on tv(shame about chinese commentry :sniffle: )
bluenose247...thats a great solution for the time being...works for me !(thought you said you were a newbie?)
cheers!!!!

no problem mate. i'm glad i could help
hi there,
well done on getting pplive to work through the xbox, but could someone help me with the setup? i've got both the programs required, but can't get asfstream to actually record the stream, if i put the link in it just plays it, and never seems to record a file anywhere.
can someone help with this?
thanks very much.
just wanted to say, thanks - got this to work more or less. was being a dunce and assuming it could read pplive, but it couldn't just execute it - so finally got that i needed to paste the local media player file and get it to convert that.
still had a few problems/queries though.
1. the file would occasionally stop on the xbox; i'd then have to restart it and skip forward to the place where i was before it stopped. is there a workaround for this?
2. the picture quality was ok - but actually much better on the main menu sceen when it was presented as deinterlaced and smaller screen - can you manually force it to do this in a fresh screen (with no logos covering up parts of it?)
thanks
i haven't got it working directly but i noticed that the stream
on my machine was:
http://127.0.0.1:8080/pplive#######.asf
however it actually opens that port on all interfaces, just not localhost so you can access it remotely.
from another pc i was able to do this:
http://192.168.1.100:8080/
(replace the ip with the machine receiving the stream,
you can ignore the filename part... it doesn't care)
and was able to stream it.
xbmc was able to buffer and cache the stream correctly,
but didn't like the codecs and gave an 'mpeg: no sound error'
and died.
anyone got any ideas?
i'd prefer not to rip and retransmit the stream if possible.
cheers,
rak

basically you have encountered the same problem as the people in this thread. pplive streams seem to be recorded in a format that xbmc can't read properly; therefore the work around bluenose found is required to get the stream working.
the method you mentioned does work fine for coolstreaming though.
need to set this up for tonight when a match i want to see is going to be on pplive. i have set coolstreaming up and it works a treat and i wrongly assumed that pplive would be the same :(
looking at bluenose's thread it seems i need the following two pieces of software:
getasfstream & ccxgui
does anyone have links to these and once i have them how do i get xbmc to stream it?
for coolstreaming i created a .strm file with my ip address and uploaded it to the xbox and clicked on the file in 'my music'. works fine that way.
told the lads it will all be on later so got a few coming round and would obviously be better on the big tv downstairs rather than us all crowding round my 15" monitor

and was able to stream it.

the odd thing is that i am more than able to stream the video to my pda's wm2003se own wm10 player without any problem what so ever.. sound, picture, the lot. but whenever i attempt to stream to the xbox via the 192.168.1.101:8080 method i merely get buffering up to 18.75% and then xbmc freezes on me..
i'll have to continue the 'saving' of the stream to pc hard-drive via "getasfstream" and then to have that file available to the xbmc and stream it as it's being saved... works just as well but takes up a little drive space during viewing, etc.
just to repeat, pplive works with some players eg:
wmp,
real one,
media player classic
but doesnt work on others eg:
mplayer (this is the player xbmc uses!!!)
vlc player
you can recreate exactly the same problem using mplayer on a pc, you dont need to touch xbmc.
i mailed the pplive devs and they said this is not going to change anytime soon from their end...so maybe the most likely solution will come from a update to mplayer?
hope this helps.
more clarification:
the asf stream works with media player classic. for some reason, i cannot get the realvideo stream (which some channels require) to work with mpc, only with the real player.
what is the process for filing a bug/feature request with mplayer than? i am not familiar with that but will be happy to do it if someone can leave pointers as to how.

i think what they use is getasfstream, some guy posted about that in the page before this one.... *i read that info in ******** time ago.. i dunno but i couldn't make that geatasfstream works with pplive
using http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin....8;st=15 (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=4;t=15178;st=15) i managed to setup streaming pplive using asfstream.
the problem is, that when i replay the recorded asfstream on the xbox, if i'm say within a minute of the pplive original stream it tends to only play a minute or so and then stop. so i need to restart it and then forward on to where i was, and again a similar thing happens within a few minute.
alternatively if i run the recorded asfstream on xbox about 3/4+ minutes behind the original pplive stream it can go on much longer - say today it went 30mins without cutting out.
now is this a problem to do with when it opens the file initially it reads it as e.g. a 6meg file and only plays that 6meg then stops unless it has time to "refresh" the reading which it does if i am 3/4 mins behind the original stream, but not if i am <1 min behind the original stream. if so can i change it so it updates more often?
else, if not this, does someone else know why it stops?
thanks for replies in advance!

any news on mplayer / xbmc being able to play the wm9 format that pplive uses natively?
hey don't know if this is old news or if people are now using something else instead of pplive, but i've upgraded to pplive 1.0.9.8 and this all streams beautifully now direct to xbmc without the need for any intermediate conversion tools.
later on dudes.
yes pplive does work streaming to xbmc now. just a pity i can't rent a thai chick to translate whos got the bloody ball! :)
ok, false alarm, i figured it out -- i had been trying it over and over with diff versions/configs/etc all the while using port 8080... fired up cmd and did a netstat -n and noticed that it was using port 8888 (lucky numbers!) -- changed that in my .strm, and bingo, all golden ;)

could you shed a bit of light for me on the process of setting this up?
i had previously used a much older version of pplive just for watching things on the pc, and would love to have it stream through xbox.
i've downloaded and installed their latest which seems to be 1.1.0.0 now, and it's entirely different that the old version i had used. it now comes up with a pplayer, and by fumbling i managed to get the pplive systray icon there and selected a channel, which in turn brought up a small window showing that it was buffering, etc.
i then created a pplive.strm file with http://192.168.1.101:8080 (the ip of my pc running pplive) in it, and accessed this through the xbox... it came up as connecting to the stream, but did nothing and then it closed the dialog. also, i am using 2005-11-27 t3ch build of xbmc
real excited to hear that this finally works directly, so any help would be greatly appreciated. *

momdad
1) forget the pplayer we dont need it here
2) fire up the pplive engine (what you call systray?) and select channel, confirm it plays using wmp or something else, then
3) what i have in my strm file is
http://192.168.1.101:8888/1.asf
assuming that 192.168.1.101 is the ip adddress of your pc
