Is there some trick for smb with xp home?

hey i'm new and didn't find anything via help...

problem: my buddy can't get his smb to connect to his pc.
with few exceptions i set his system up very simlar to mine.
only major exception is i have xp pro and he has xp home.

setup: xp home, router, xbox, norton internet security 2005 (doesn't work even if norton is off)

we got internet feeds to work, but not the smb connection.

router: 192.168.144.1 (i think)
pc: 192.168.144.100
xb: 192.168.144.101

xp firewall is off and file share is enabled (as far as i can tell), and norton internet security is installed.

only built-in accounts and one user account without a password.

when ever he tries to connect to the pc it asks for a name and password. it never connects, even if he puts in a name and/or adds a password within xp account.

like i said before except for router brands and ip numbers, i set up his system nearly identical (even did an oem restore recently). when i connect to smb to my xp pro box everything works fine.

any suggestions? i won't be able to physicallly check his pc for a few days - just yahoo chat and kai chat...

no trick needed for smb with xp-home. works fine without tricks overhere. could be a wrong workgroup setting in the samba section in xboxmediacenter.xml ..

hi,
i had some trouble with networking when i set my xbox up up. i read in some forum that changing the starting ip in ur networkfrom 192.xxx.x.100 to 192.xxx.x.200 will help..
it did work for me. i dont know why..give it a try

your friend is just hitting the wrong smb share path, the one he is hitting is should manually be configured from the xboxmediacenter.xml for the best results.

anyway all he has to do is go to my videos from xbmc's main menu and select "workgroup (smb) network" and keep pressing select/or a until he see's his shared folders.

no matter what we change, my friends xbox keeps asking for name/password when trying to connect to smb.

could someone post a sample <samba> section based on the numbers i used?
