i just installed an open source media-server/smarthome project, plutohome.org. their bootable cd installs a linux-based server that exposes network boot images for any pc's around the house, however they said all the software is cross-platform and does windows too.
it does a ton of cool stuff. for example, put a dvd in any room and your bluetooth mobile phone pops up with the cover art and becomes a remote control, and hit 'follow-me' and your media follows you as you move around the house, if you carry your phone and put bluetooth dongles in each room. it also automatically adjusts the lights, climate, etc., and has a phone system, and you can control it with pda's, tablets. the only thing is it means you need to put a pc in each room. enter xbmc.
firstly the xbox makes a great low-cost media station (as you guys know), and if we could use xbmc as a pluto media director, then instead of being a single-user product it would be a whole-house solution that tied it all together. second, the way pluto works is to have 1 server (core) provide a network boot image to all the media systems. the advantage is then you can leave whatever o/s is installed on the hard drive and just toggle between netboot and h/d boot. they actually do it automatically and it's controlled with the remote. if we did this with xbmc, then we could leave microsoft's xbox image on the hard drive, and make it dual purpose--vanilla xbox or xbmc. and the user wouldn't need to mod anything since no xbmc s/w would be installed on the xbox--it would all be in the net boot image. that would be awesome!
what do you think?
