Network Attached Storage solution?

hi i am wondering if someone could tell me if this product could be accessed with xbmc over lan:

rather foolish concept on my part but i see all this crap about nas, esp terabyte nas and well rather than hunt about for one that may/may not work why not just build your own?

i currently have an old hp 6700 series mini-tower that i did the terabyte thing with (4 250g maxtor drives) and used naslite. is a floppy install that loads the entire os and what not from the floppy and it runs great. if my drives go nuts.. well i just swap em out.

and it does work like a charm with xbmc ;)

ok, can u recommend me a pc case which can hold loads of hd's (lets say at least 6) and is rather cheap?

dont know where to point you there except pricewatch to look. the case you pointed out is a liam li, like the cadillac of pc cases (certainly normally one of the most expensive). the lil sucker i threw together is a minitower that has no cdrom so it holds 4 automatically. dont know why youd be looking at 12 as the software i mentioned above only makes use of the ide channels and then your doing a max of 4.

when i built my server i just went and installed windows 2003.

i've now got 6 hard drives (4 ide and 2 on a pci to sata interface) installed. this brings my available space to 1.6tb. and it'll be easy to add more. that's all that's in there btw. no monitor or cd/dvdrom drives, no keyboard or mouse, heck not even a floppy. it's stuck in the cupboard and i just vnc into it to do anything. it runs 24/7 without a problem.

i did fork out almost £100 for a near silent case and a near silent processor fan. add in a heatsink for northbridge and a silent psu and i've got the ideal server. quiet, cool and plenty of space.

thanks for telling me about naslite.
i found an old windows95 computer for £25, downloaded naslite, bought 10 floppy discs for £2 and i already had a cople of spare hard drives. so in total it cost me under £30 to get started. i`ll add more drives when i need, and can afford, them.

i haven't built this machine yet but this is how i'm going about it, going to build a system using antec aria case, connected to that via firewire will be this:

run ccxgui, share the directories, saves time in setting up manually smba shares etc.

i prefer this method because it is firewire, the drives can be daisy chained, so if you need more hard drives space just get another one of these connect it, format drives and share the drives.

os will be win2k

to control and modify settings, going to use remote administrator.

i've used a rocketraid 454 card to give 8x300gb with raid5. nearly 2.1tb of storage. i'm ripping dvds to "uncompressed" vobs (that is, i use dvd decrypter, not dvd shrink) and save the resultant movie as one huge vob file and it's going great. i'll soon have my whole dvd collection available on xbmc.

and in answer to the original question :) it does say it supports smb. i must admit, i did look at one of these but had a spare poweredge 1300 (2cpu,1gb ram) unused.
