ok. my scenario:
videos extracted from a directv tivo, 480x480 interlaced (either in .ty or .mpg format)
videos then moved to an smb server
xbmc-enabled xbox connected to an analog ntsc sd tv via rca composite video
i have been fighting video quality issues with these files. in particular, i get stuttering video from time to time. in order to figure out the best way to mitigate this, i need to understand what xbmc is doing.
before enabling a "deinterlace" option in xbmc, i was getting bad sawtooth effects, suggesting what normally happens when you try to play an interlaced video on a progressive source. what this suggests to me is that xbmc is
taking the 480x480i video and deinterlacing it and (possibly) resizing it
re-interlacing it as it outputs to the ntsc tv
is this the case? if so, can anyone recommend the best tuning/settings to make interlaced videos look decent? (i suppose i could always pipe all the videos through avisynth and deinterlace with ffdshow but...eww, what a pain...)
