but i'm unclear about how to open one of these files. *let me give an example. *there is a daily video program that i watch that is a .ram file. *according to the xbmc website this container file is supported yet it does not show up under my videos. *it does show up under my files but does not play when selected. *has anybody had experience with .ram files for real media in general.
thanks,

after posting i found the following:
xboxmediacenter cvs source code in addition to above supports the following:
features available for video playback:
- play realmedia internet steams of http + rtsp/rdt (real data transport protocol)
features available for audio playback/backup:
- play realmedia internet steams of http + rtsp/rdt (real data transport protocol)
i opened up the .ram file with notepad and it shows a rtsp:// url so maybe the latest cvs build will help me? now if someone could point me in the right direction to learn how to install cvs builds...
(not where to get them but how to use them, i know where to get them)
thanks,

ok upgraded to the latest cvs build which, from the change log, does support rtsp protocol streams. *but .ram files still do not show up under 'my videos' as other real media files, like ra and rm, do yet the .ram container file is supposed to be supported. *here is what i did:
the .ram container that i downloaded is a text file with this contents- rtsp://rxns-rbn-sea13.rbn.com/farm/*/demnow/demnow/demand/2005/march/video/dnb20050311a.rm -so i copied this rtsp url and pasted it into another text file and saved it as democracynow.strm
success! *but the audio and video don't seem to be interleaved properly and the video is too fast. *so i have three questions:
-how do i get .ram files to show up as supported file types in 'my videos' etc and are they really supported?
-if i have to use .strm files to do this is there an easy way to convert them automatically to this format once downloaded?
-are there settings that i can modify that will help me with my out of sync real media stream? *(btw i already tried raising the cache so much so that it downloads the whole bit before playing and it is still out of sync.)
i need one you gurus to help me. *otherwise i will have had this entire conversation alone. *and while that would be very zen of me i'd rather get some expert advice.
thanks,

also the original stream plays fine on my pc so xbmc is only playing it out of syc. *(ie the file was muxed properly during production)

(persistent fucker, aint i?)
what is the date of the cvs build that you're using? there were some fixes in mplayer about this as far as i remember...
but anyway, to make xbmc think that .ram files are video, just the extension to the list of video extensions in xboxmediacenter.xml which will be in the same dir as the xbe file.

i didn't compile myself but downloaded the pre-compiled build from whoever runs that distro server. the date on the file was 3-12 and the change log shows the latest fixes in my copy are 3-11.
i added the .ram extension to the xml file as you said and those files now show under 'my videos' but when you open them the box freezes :verysad: .

another observation about the symptom: *the sync difference is constant throughout the stream. *that is to say, there is a one second difference from beginning to end rather than it gradually getting worse as the stream goes on.
the problem seems to be, very simply, that the video started and a second later the audio started.
any suggestions?
:help: *:help: *:help:
try disabling the autosync=30 in mplayer.conf file (system/players/mplayer/mplayer.conf). add a # before the autosync=30 line.

you are my hero! * * this did the trick perfectly. *how do you suppose this will affect other playback?
also, are .ram containers only supported for audio? *they still do not work and i am having to rename the file .strm.

i'm assuming you tried his above tip? if not verify that you saved it properly before uploading back to your box. it fixed my problem. lot's of luck!
