Skin problem. please help.

i just installed xbmc v1.1.0 (build 2005.03.11) and i'm experiencing display problems in the menus. it seems to be a bad skin or corrupted graphic files.

the menus are unreadable and most images appear as red or pink squares.

the release's known_issues.txt file states the following (which i've discovered after messing up with my previous installation):

* issue: all skins will be broken after 2-12-2004 due to new settings system.
reason: new settings system
solution: use project mayhem from cvs until skins are updated. versioning system will be added shortly.

i believe it's related to my problem. however, i don't know how to use the project mayhem files from cvs.

i've also tried to reinstall the version that was working before i tried to update (can't tell exactly which version, but i think it's a release from late january), but the problem is still present.

could anyone help me fixing this annoying problem. i don't mind using previous build, as long as it displays properly.

still haven't manage to fix the problem.
no one has any idea?

note that the only text that is displayed properly is the one in the upper-right corner and that no image other than the background image is displayed. there is no highlight on the selected menu item either, which makes browsing the menus pretty tricky.

any advice would be very appreciated.
