it would be mutch faster way to do a search, because you dont have to type the whole name. and especially if you dont know the name of a song exactly

maybe it could be done by a view filter and the "phone" input method/onscreen keyboard and normal keyboard. this way the view filter can exclude the files that doesn't match the words you just entered. this should of course be done in the database to make it quicker.

does'nt anybody see the point in this feature?

try pressing "j" in winamp and you will know what i mean :o

i get what your saying and defently agree.

maybe an alternate explination to help others get it.

it would be an on the fly search. so your searching for "stairway to heaven" when u type "s" it would jump u to the "s"s then when u hit "t" it would jump you to the "st"'s. you can repeat this process untill you get close enough to just scroll the rest of the way.

this would be much much faster than typing in "stairway to heaven" or the way i format filenames "led zeplin - iv - stairway to heaven" and what if you forget some little part like the album(iv isnt the album stairway to heaven is on) or make a small typo? you have to retype all that over again.

say you want to just jump to an artist on your playlist. youd have to remember the file name of the first alphabetical song. remember that if you have a file list big enought to need to do a search in the first place you probably have tag info off so its not hella slow.

defently would love this feature if you read this and dont get it say so and we will convince you!

so you got a keyboard attached?

how else would this be usable?
there is an onscreen keyboard :d if you had a real keyboard this feature wouldnt be as usefull(but defently good still)

thanx blindguy... nice to se that that at least one person isnt blind to my suggestion :o

but still with a real keyb it would be a very fast way to do a search... ( 2 sec or less :p )

any developer with a comment??

i have two suggestions.

1. a search form at the top where searches could be entered with the remote (the phone way) or using the onscreen keyboard with the gamepads. edit: or what about this: if pressing one of the 0-9 buttons on the remote, a dialog would pop up reading characters "phone style"

2. a row at the top with a|b|c|d etc. selecting d would jump to artists/albums starting with a d.

i think the the second suggestion is both easier and faster. at least it would be good enough for me as it would make it way faster to get to my white stripes albums... :-)

the second suggestion is a reasonable one, however it ignores what many such suggestions ignore:

how does one navigate to such a control?

i dont think a row of 26+ items will fit on the screen. * a "starts with" button would work. it could be a button like whats used to scroll between files, library and top 100. but, for speed, it also needs to accept entry from the remote number pad, and a keyboard, so it can jump immediately to that character.

how about replacing the small arrows at the bottom right with 26 similar buttons. since 26+ buttons is a lot, how about using only every third or fourth letter..?

edit: or why have any visible letters at all? how about that pressing "5" on the remote three times takes you to artists beginning with "l"?

but personally, i think kraqh3d's suggestion is better...

agreed that the remote sms style (or keyboard) is nice and intuitive + very quick.

also agreed that 26 buttons is far too many.

however, reducing this to 1 may be overkill, plus, you'd have to place it obviously.

how about this: instead of the page up/page down buttons (or perhaps including them) we have a scroll bar on the right. so you press right off the list/thumb panel to get to this scroll bar. pressing up/down then moves by a single character (ie a -> b etc.) furthermore, the scrollbar gives a nice graphic illustration of where you are in the list. it's also great for mouse users.

this would work great for long lists, as the normal scrolling is fast enough i think to take care of a single character jump (both with the gamepad, or by using pageup/down on the remote)

for shorter lists, it wouldn't necessarily be quite as good, though imo anything less than about 5 pages or so doesn't need such a mechanism, and it should be disabled completely in the case of a single page (just like the pageup/down control is)

comments?

cheers,
jonathan

i think the scrollbar is a very good idea. i would be happy with that. (not that i'm not already happy...).

so far i think the best solution would be to have both the scrollbar and the feature of using the remote sms-style without any on-screen buttons.

you can use the onscreen keyboard like how it is curently. in the background you see the list of songs moving as you enter letters. when you hit enter it closes the keyboard and leaves you in the spot you jumped to.

i think an easier way to enter characters would be a round keypad like some of the games have for username entry.

it is much faster to navigate then a standard on-screen keyboard.

i also like blindguy's last suggestion.

i think the two compliment each other well...
round keypad and automatic character entry list navigation

i think a scrollbar would be totally freakin' sweet.

sweet! you speak exactly my words blindguy... *

maybe it could also be auto triggered by the "phone input method" and a key on a normal keyboard

how does one navigate to such a control?
it could be done with a "jump" or "search" button next to the arrows at the bottom right. pressing the jumb putton could pop up the onscreen keyboard or something.

i still prefer the "invisible" sms method though.

is there any developer that would be interested in looking into this?

this feature would really take xbmc's navigation capabilities to the next level... :)

how about this as a search design...
remember, this is a conceptsketch. =) i'm not that good with ui designs

or maybe something like this (with the keypad hidden and only using sms-style)

whats the point of a new keyboard, there is already one that you can use to search. the problem we are adressing is how you must currently type the entire length of the file correctly instead of just the first few letters

wtz

yeah i realize that, however i'm just giving some suggestions of how it could be implemented in the ui aspect. since that is what have been discussed earlier and since the current keyboard is kind of oddly placed if you also need a result field. that's why i'm suggesting to use a more compact keyboard.

a preview of how it could be inplemented in the gui with an option to turn the keyboard on and off for users without a remote

without keyboard (text input by phone method or a normal pc) keyboard

point me in the right direction if i'm looking at the wrong thing, but i just press search, type 4 or 5 letters (in sms style if i have the remote in my hand) and then press enter/select.

i get a list of tracks containing those letters? i've just stuck "diam" in and get 1 album and 6 songs containing "diamond" somewhere in their name. works on my 1000s of tracks.

i like the interactive format idea - smaller keyboard with the list instantly updating as you press each letter - but it's only a little polish to something that works already as far as i can see?

mou you wouldnt want it to search the middle of the string
your entry in the demo should be "50 c" not "cent"

mou
2005-05-04, 17:57
a little polish... in my opinion it would be a sweet upgrade because you don't have to start over if you typed wrong and there would be no need of typing more letters then needed because you see the result emediatly...

wry not blindguy...? with a search string in the middle of a word like winamp it would possible to find the song that you cant remember the name of

example: eminem - like toy soldiers

ex. of search stings:

-> emi (shows everything with emi, resulting in a list of eminem songs)
-> soldier (if you cant rember the name of the artist, but know that the track name contains the word soldier)

-> oldie  (not that this would come in handy, but still possible)

the currently search function in xbmc does this aswell. so it is only a matter of the self updating results list, not a rebuild of the search function :)
