i had this silly notion of xbox media center running on a linux which booted on the xbox....
so i thought to myself, cant i compile it to run on a linux on a pc... or am i missing something ?
thanx in advance for your response :)

actually xbmc is running on an xbox which has a subset of the windows kernel with some add-ons (right?). so there is no linux involved anywhere.
but then you could ask the question: is it possible to run xbmc on windows 2k or xp?
would be great.. i think?! much easiers to test, skin, script etc
redriddler
the only way for this would be emulation. otherwise using it to preview a build for scripting purposes would be pointless, as the code would just have to be changed for it to be put onto an xbox.
to put it as simply as i know how, all programs for consoles (including the xbox) call for a specific bit of hardware in order to work, which pc programs call for a generic bit of hardware. eg. xbox looks for nvidia focus chipset to show software (for v1.4 and v1.5) while a pc looks for generic graphics chipset. so unless the pc has that exact hardware (which it can't) it won't work.

wrong, xbmc source code could 'simply' be ported to win32 for win2000/xp/2003 and windows will handle all device drivers, believe frodo mentioned that could be done with a couple of weeks full time coding, but have no reason to do that now, maybe when the xbox is dead(?)
ps! emulation is only needed to run pre-compiled code, like a original game, so not a good alternative if got the full source code http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
its not 2 hard to port xbmc to windows (xp)
i guess it could be done withing lets say 1-2 weeks
however why do this?
there are already very good alternatives for the pc like:
- showshifter
- myhtpc
- windows media center 2004
- freevo (linux)
- mythtv (linux)
and prolly a lot more i dont know off...

*windows media center
too specific hardware requirements
*showshifter mythtv and freevo
too tv oriented....
besides i've been lookin around and the xbox media center really is the best software around..... but if anyone knows of a good similar software for linux i'd like to hear about it

snapstream (http://www.snapstream.com), and another clone*is j. river media center (http://www.mediajukebox.com/mediacenter/), then there's of course xine (http://www.xinehq.de), mplayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu), xmms (http://www.xmms.org/), videolan (http://www.videolan.org/) and vdr (http://www.cadsoft.de/vdr/)

vdr
so im still hunting for that killer jukebox app for linux or windows... :)

and an other one pinnacle showcenter...
it might make more sense to port it to xp once we've got xpe running on our xbox's hehe :d
one reason i can see for porting it to win32 is that it would make it easier for people to develop, debug and test. the core developers could ensure that it still runs on the xbox and other developers would not even have to have access to an xdk
it might make more sense to port it to xp ...
actually
it makes more sense 2 port it to longhorn
creating an app similar to xbmc in longhorn with c# and xaml would be soooo easy
much easier then doing the same stuff on xp

ok, perhaps i shouldnt ask... and i'm only now starting to consider modding my xbox, but as i have an (older) shuttle pc lying around is it at all possible to run xbmc on it ?.
now.. if its not at all possible, then thanks anyway - i should have known better, but if it is possible - to what ever extent, how difficult is it ?.
i have just downloaded the sources, and will be re-installing vs after a long time out of coding to have a look - but has this been tried, and failed etc.. or is it a case of well maybe ?!?!?
if so - what needs to be done to get it to work ?

well it should be possible to port xbmc to the pc but it will be a task for the next weeks/months.
atm none of our devs is willing to do it, but feel free to try. we would like to see a pc port of it. :)
port all the xbox specific code... ;)
at the least you'll need to rewrite most of the texturing support, and probably some of the other 3d stuff. also the yv12->rgb converter is xbox specific, though you could probably port to pc fairly easily.

the pc-based media centers mentioned...do any of them work with xns? that's what i'd like - to be able to use the same xns server w/ xbox as well as pc.
codepoet,
i think xns may disappear sometime soon.
people should be moving to smb. or if you really want to use something else, then xbmsp (ccxstream).

and i'm starting to like the idea of xbmc on a pc.
it could open up an all new way to go.
i want to make a htpc able to timeshift, and record tv programs.
wouldn't it be great if xbmc on pc would do this.
cause one disadvantage of xbmc is that i am now spoiled.

ok guys.
there was some little secret i allready knew about so i wanted to know your opinions.
here you guys have a work in progress of...........
xbmc for pc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
read me :
----------------------------------------------------
xbmc for windows
requirements:
- .net framework 1.1
- directx 9 or higher
keycodes:
s = controller start
x,y = controller x,y
a,b = controller a,b
f3 = controller white
f1 = controller black
esc = controller back
tvguide:
goto my tv->tvguide
hit f3 to reload the tvguide. then go back to menu and back to tvguide again
press a to record a show
the tvguide is based on xmltv and located in xmltv/tguide.xml
use xml/tvguide.bat to refresh the tvguide (dutch version)
fullscreen/windowed
use alt+enter to switch between fullscreen/windows mode
players:
xbmc/windows uses external players like zoomplayer / powerdvd or any other player
make sure to set them up in file->setup
setup
use file->setup to set things up like shares/folders etc. settings isnt working yet
---------------------------------------------------
be sure to follow these directions
here is the link to a slow mirror , i hope someone will post a faster mirror soon.
thanx and enjoy.
http://kroonstraat.demon.nl/temp/xbmc_pc.zip
btw, this does not mean any end to xbmc for xbox whatsoever!!!!!!!!

it should play music and movies fine.
be sure you setup zoomplayer correctly in the setup.
(click on file menu at the top of the window)
what does the logfile sayni the xbmc folder?

thanx for your input.
it has been run on 4 pc till public so problems r expected now :)
good stuff these reports.
do all mp3's give you this error?
btw. audio is played internally still
MrMario64
2004-04-07, 17:23
\\pcname\mp3\\a perfect circle\mer de noms\judith.mp3
the problem lies in the 2 slashes \\ after mp3.
how did yuou select the mpr?
how does your share look?
CodePoet
2004-04-07, 17:47
the share looks fine - i can browse it fine in xbmcpc. i just select the file and it's apparently adding the \\ on it's own. the share is set up as:
\\computername\mp3
CodePoet
2004-04-07, 17:53
it doesn't play anything in that folder - but it plays other .mp3s - could it be an mp3 header issue? any support for itunes (.m4a) at this point?
i changed the share to \\computer\mp3 (removed outer \), but still get an error:
4/7/2004 10:49:20 am audioplayer.play exception \\c\mp3\a perfect circle\mer de noms\3 libras.mp3 err:error in the application. stack: at microsoft.directx.audiovideoplayback.audio.openurl (string address, boolean autorun)
at microsoft.directx.audiovideoplayback.audio.open(st ring filename, boolean autorun)
at microsoft.directx.audiovideoplayback.audio..ctor(s tring filename)
at player.audioplayer.play(string strfile)
try mapping \\computername\mp3 to a drive like f: or h:
that should work

couple of questions here, for a start i cant believe that you clever guys have got this running on pc, its my fav media interface, on both my xbox's...
1st, there is a tv guide section and a record tv, is this just there for the future or can this somehow be made to work now?? might be a lame question but woth asking anyhow..
2nd all my music is in wma, can these be made to show up in xbmppc??
MrMario64
2004-04-09, 01:16
yes, the tv stuff will be functional.
currently the recording side of the app is being written.
so you will be able to :
record programs,
schedule recordings
edit scheduled recordings
timeshift tv
record from radio
program recording from tvguide
and a lot more to come ofcourse.
and second, yes wma should be viewable.
go to file>setup>my music
there you can set what extensions you want to see.

this is a wicked development, and much kudos to the all responsible, i love the xbmc on my xbox's particularly with the new skin but the inability to do the pvr stuff was a bit of a bummer, i have a pvr 250 tv card thats has hardware encoding etc, so will the tv recording section be mpeg based i hope so!! if anyone needs any help testing the tv recording etc, i would be glad to help as the 250 seems to be the "standard" as it were for pvr setups, it works very well in my mce box and would love to see it working in this, man the possibilities :-)

hey guys,
i also think xbmc port to the pc is a great thing... but ... there is always a but :).. doesn't this mean there is less time to work on the "real" xbmc? of course i know the devs have the freedom to choose what is most fun to do, but me as a xbox owner and still not seeing why i wanna use a pc for watching movies (they are still noisy, ugly, slow to start etc) like to see xmbc being developped further and getting better.
greetz riddler..
MrMario64
2004-04-09, 14:16

hi redriddler, good point about the xbox version still being developed and of course it will, but imagine the set up i have here, i have a quiet, good looking pvr system under my tv running windows media center edition, it could just as easily run snapstream, in two of our bedrooms we have xbox's connected to the lan and running xbmc, what i have always wanted is a unified interface for everything in the house, the development of a pc version alongside the xbox gives me the means to have the xbmc interface running on the pvr pc as well once the recording bit is sorted out.."one gui to rule them all" :-)
MrMario64
2004-04-09, 14:23
@ riddler.
a htpc is a pc specifically built for use as mediacenter.
they r pretty silent (like xbox or less).
pc mediacenters just can be used more easily with pvr capabilities.
now, depending on how the project goes, there are ideas about making xbmc-xbox connect to xbmc-pc and maybe then use the pvr stuff using this connection.
none is set in stone yet, and at this point lets first make a nice working mediacenter.
it is not intended as replacement, nor doesn't this mean that xbmc isn't being developed anymore.

(feature request)
just thought i would chip in with a few suggestions/feature requests for future versions if possible, i dont know jack about programming so i have mucho respect for the guys involved in this, but i have been playing with htpc style systems for years, even *before it became trendy, and i have a little experience with how they maybe should work...
1) when using xbmc you are actually using mplayer to view video but its seamless, you never see the mplayer gui in any form, or would even know you are using it, tight integration with zoomplayer or control over zoomplayers functions via the xbmc-pc interface would be nice ie: zoomplayer has an excellent method of choosing your aspect ratio, maybe controlled from the xbmc interface..like you can in xbmc/mplayer
bring in the xbmc control panel on screen for brightness etc like you can on the new xbmc, but linked to z/player??
2)editable keymaps?? assign your own keys to the interface functions this would make it a breeze to set girder up etc, on my mce remote it uses back to get out of a subsection, at the mo xbmc uses esc, if this was replaced by back then i probably wouldnt even have to use girder :-)
3)maybe have the tv guide section in the xbox version put in, and set so that people who dont need it can turn it off in settings, but the people with pvr's can remotely program the xbmc -pc version and schedule recordings from another room, this would be way cool...already on the cards it seems..excellent!!
just replying to comments waaayyyy back there concerning the x-box dieing and suggesting a feature for the pc port....possibly for xbmc if it supports hdd recording in the future.
i seriously think that thanks to developments like xbmc and emulators like xsnes9x etc. the xbox will be the most popular second hand console of all time. once joe public catches on to what can be done with a console that will be £30-£40 in a couple of years. add £20 quid for a modchip (presuming you are fitting yourself) and i'm sure a 300gb hdd like mine won't cost £220 by then either. although if you want to fork out that kind of cash for a hdd in a couple of years it will be huge and i think i'm right in saying that the max capacity of lba 48 is around 2.2 terabyte. that's a lot of divx.
the xbox running xbmc can do more than any commercialy available kit i'm aware of, and besides, how much of a pain in the arse would riging a homemade shuttle to do the stuff xbmc and xbox emulators do. also how much would this device cost? you have so many features eploitong the fact ms sells these things at a loss. the only thing i can think of is the archos and i don't have the arm and a leg spare to buy one, but they are very cool.
with this in mind i can only see the xbox becoming irrelevant when video codecs become more processor/memory intensive than the xbox has to offer. i'm in the process of *aquiring* .ogg and .mkv versions of my entire video collection, and don't see why anybody would want/need better quality than this.
as for you mrmario 64, i extend to you the same heartfelt thanks i extend to the xbmc team and other key teams in the xbox-dev community. it is a step towards one standard for cross platform media management without the help of ms. now for a feature request concerning tv recording.
ok! so you have your tv listing in xbmc-pc wouldn't it be nice if it could set up an http server to control what is getting recorded. while it's true that on you home network you have control over this through xbmp and xbmp-pc, lets say you go to work where you are connected to the internet. a colleigue informs you of a great bbc documentary concerning digital media, p2p fileshare and the economic, political and social ramifications it has and will have that you simply *must* see, but it is on while you are working that day and you can't get home to set up your network. lets face it, you don't trust any other members of your family to set it up over the phone....what will you do? dont panic! you simply http into your xbmp network and set it to record using a nice web based gui. yum!
anyway good luck with the port, and if it isn't too much to ask (i don't now how much of a headache this is) a mouse driven interface would be very nice ;)

on xbmc zoom/stretch can be used to pretty much fill the screen no matter how the original film was set up, letterbox etc, when using the zoom stretch it does have some effect but does not seem to be as effective as xbmc's perhaps i need to play with the output settings for my codecs etc if this is not correct? or is this a job in progress??
but you are right mrmario the gui is superb now, very nice, this is going to set the htpc scene on fire once word gets around myhtpc is crap compared to this!!

one request though mrmario can the esc key be changed for back for navigating out of the menus etc this will make the software much more compatible with many tv card remotes including the mce one that i use, dont know if this would be possible but it would be nice!!
thanks

my weather worked fine on the previous versions, now i get an exception when i run this section
MrMario64

yes zoommode is in.
press s to zoom.
btw, due to a bug mpg has a black screen with only sound with the internal player.

great looney tunes.....
thanx for the reports.
i will discuss them.
the keys will all be configureable in the future.
so do not worry about that yet.
the resolution in video mode is still a bit off i think.
will discuss this to.
problem is, what do we need to do?
use external player alone?
or make a great internal one?
internal one gave some problems before so you guys test this one thoroughly and see if it hangs for you after stopping a movie and starting a movie serveral times etc. stress the mf!!
you guys can give directions if you want.
we are open to all great ideas!
about myhtpc:
yeah, i can't believe why people love it so much.
you have to do so much shit to get imdb info, or album art, or whatever.
but i am not a good person to judge this.
xbmc is tailor made to most of my likings so it's natural i find it better.
and open source has this great advantage. much more tailor made stuff.
i want a mc remote to. can you arrange them?
we need 2 to ship to holland :)
loonytunes
2004-04-12, 13:32
hi mrmario, i love zoomplayer but i think the internal player would be best if it can be made robust, if not then zoomplayer but all controlled from the xbmc gui without feeling like its a seperate app (dont know if thats possible)
obviously the tv recording once it comes in will be great, i use mce at the mo , but it has a major flaw when playing back video files stored on disk other than the ones it records and this is peeing me of big time..
got my mce remote off of ebay for £40 quid there are loads there and there is a guy in the states who will ship to europe
most of the remote sellers have a line on getting hold of them and all seem to be genuine, the guy i bought mine off can get lots i will have a word with him and see if he will ship to yours!!

the thing i dislike about the external player is that none on the pc have a good 16x9 mode.
i want the video to be squashed by the player so my tv stretches it in the correct ar again. not one player does this for me.
they all go to 16x9 mode not widescreen.
the problem with 16x9 is that the gui doesn't fit then. so there r 2 options.
find a player that does widescreen or change the gui to 16x9.
i would like the player to correct it.

for all.
in the xbmc folder there is the todo.txt and changelog.txt
check this for new stuff and stuff we still want in there.
2) is the skining system much different? just for kicks i copied the latest projectmayhem skin into the skins directory, and all though it did appear in the list of selectable skins, it showed all black.
no its almost the same
only thing i can think of which is different is fonts.xml
checkout the pc version of skin/mediacenter/fonts.xml and
the xbox version and you'll see what has been changed

hi frodo /mrmario, had the same thing when trying to use the mce skin,(the new one thats compatible with the latest versions) .............all black
all black with the projectmayhem skin too (and i've made it only the two folders).
music db functioanlity doesn't seem to work. i've scanned, but i never get any display different than filename.mp3. also, i get nothing in the 'other' views.
also seems to be a bug when sorting order changes, only related to icon modes. for example, i have it sorted alphebetically with a-ha showing first, and whitesnake showing last. when i change the arrow from down to up, i get u2 showing first, then ccr, then rem -- very out of order. if i switch to list mode all is well. if i switch back to an icon mode, it's broken again.

along with album art lookup

and some more stuff..
will be a new version soon i think.

hi jaga, glad to see others helping the guys with bug fixes etc..
the more people chip in the more help the devs get, once this is stable and full featured, with the devs permission i will notify the htpc scene about this great app and myhtpc will dissapear without trace :-)
ok, i tried pm skin. it results in a black screen.
what needs 2b done:
1. rename font.xml->fonts.xml
2. edit fonts.xml (see below)
3. pm skin uses compressed textures
all gfx are placed in 1 single file called media/textures.xpr
this isnt supported yet on the pc. you need the original .png files for pm

ok :) nice
i have tried it out now but i can't let go of the feeling that it's slow... i feel like i'm in glue.. but hey it doesn't matter.. it's the xbox version that counts and that baby flies :d

weird,
when your direct x is correctly installed and your hardware acceleration is on then xbmc-pc should fly as well. and depending on your graphics card it can be way faster???
not to talk bad about xbmc-xbox but it's just a fact that pc hardware currently can be way faster.
so there could be some config problem on your part.
MrMario64

sure, spread the word.
be sure to tell it's not feature complete yet and development is progressing rapidly :)

i have a 1,33 ghz amd with a geforce 2 pro gfx card.
games work ok and so does anything else using dx.. don't understand why xbmc feels slow.. but as i said, i'm not gonna use it so it doesn't matter.. just installed it to se how it looks..
ever since i got my xbox with xbmc i can't go back using my computer for movie watching *:)
i hope that the pc version won't slow down the development of the xbox version to much though..
keep it up!

so on lcd monitors it will all look fine.
but on tv's 4:3 or 16:9 you need to calibrate.
the square you will see during one of the calibration steps should be peerfectly square. measure with a ruler.
this correction is applied on pictures, thumbnails etc.
i think it is not yet used on video.
check it out :)

great work!
this could be really useful for debugging python scripts, we havent got access to xbmc/xbmcgui on the pc.
any chance of python in the near future?
MrMario64
2004-04-13, 12:01
is python really needed for the pc version??
you can let windows take care of stuff now.
run schedular and batch files etc.
mail checkers, bittorent clients, ftp servers, etc etc are all available without the need of python.
so, whats the use?
Denhomer
2004-04-13, 12:04
is it possible to release the changed source code for this windows build ?
i'm really interested in making this work, i think it's the best htpc solution that exists for windows, considering that open source is good.
python for xbmc/pc?
personally i dont see any reason for this.
like mrmario64 said, you can already run python scripts on your pc and have them scheduled by windows if you want
if you want to integrate something in xbmc/pc you have to write a plugin for xbmc/pc.
currently xbmc/pc supports the following plugins:
1. window plugin
an example is home.dll
this is a simple plugin which creates/renders the home panel. a more advanced version is guimusic.dll which contains the 6 my music windows (artists,albums,genres,top100,songs,playlist)
window plugins should be placed in plugins/windows and will be dynamicly & automaticly loaded by xbmc/pc
you can do just anything you can think of with your own window plugin
2. subtitle reader plugin
subtitle reader plugins can read a specific subtitle format like .srt or .smi or...
they are located in plugins/subtitle and will be dynamicly & automaticly loaded by xbmc/pc
by creating your own subtitle reader plugin you can add support for new subtitle formats
out of the box xbmc supports .smi & .srt subtitles
3. tag reader plugin
tag reader plugins can read tags from a music file
they are located in plugins/tagreaders and will be dynamicly & automaticly loaded by xbmc/pc
by creating your own tag reader plugin you can add support for reading new music file types
at the moment xbmc/pc just has 1 tagreader called mp3tagreader.dll which supports id3v1 / id3v2 tags in mp3 files
offcourse you need the source to write your own plugins.
we hope to find a place to put the source soon

yes i agree, python isn't so useful for xbmc on the pc, but it would give us xbox python coders a decent testing environment.
with the xbmc and xbmcgui objects exposed in windows i could write massive scripts that span tons of screens, instead of writing a command line app and then throwing a crappy looking gui together and hoping that it works
...run, botch, upload, re-run, repeat til fade...
isn't it possible to put the source on sourceforge too
like i said, we hope to release it soon.
it would give us xbox python coders a decent testing environment.
maybe, but thats not the purpose of xbmc/pc. i wont be adding support for python since its no use on the pc. if somebody else wants to add it then thats fine

ok i really hope you release the source code for this project. i have been wanting to develop a better music interface(see ipod/itunes) for the xbox version for a couple of months now. the reason is so that it is easy and quick to navigate between artists, and different albums using the id3 tags. unfortantly i have been unable to sacrafice my xbox to a dev box because i need it to keep playing games. but now that there is a pc version perhaps if a better interface for music is deisgned, by myself or someone for the pc version, the xbox developers will be able to easily port it to the xbox version. i really feel that an improved music interface is needed to make it the best media center.
agreed. something a little closer to winamp or media player. when you select the artist view, then select an artist, it should just show all that artist's songs. it should show all the albums for that artist. or let you toggle the view at least.
it turns out windows media player has a really nice interface for this. the tree on the left side is perfect, with the 3 roots (artist, genre, album). select artist, and all the artist's songs are displayed on the right pane while the artists albums are listed under that node in the the tree. click the album, and the right pane is narrowed down to just those songs.
man, i really wish i was better at c++. if this was java or c#, i'd have it done in a few days. i'm still looking through the xbmc code though, trying to get familiar with it.
dirkoneill
2004-04-13, 21:44
yes that is exactly what i was trying to describe. it doesn't seem like it would be too hard to implement. the hardest part would be managing the music databse file to keep track of each song but i believe even that could be as simple as a xml file.
are there any embedded c/c++ databases. i used hsql for my project. it's an open source embedded java database. in standalone mode, there's no server. it allows only one client and supports standard sql. it has a very small footprint. if there's one in c/c++, i"m sure it can be used on the xbox. it would make the cd database very powerful. searches would be blazing fast.
any c/c++ guys out there know of one?
dirkoneil and knubile,
for those not familar with the ipod navigation, see this demo (http://www.theapplecollection.com/collection/applemovies/mov/ipod_demo_oct23.html). personally i'd love the artist navigation to work this way in [at least] the xbox version, but i guess that's a feature suggestion.
so, when is xbmc-pc going to get it's own forum here?
loonytunes
2004-04-13, 22:07
hey frodo/mrmario, just sussed out something that might be a nice touch for the interface..
i was sat playing with mce and i realized that the interface feels very fluid in between changing modules etc, very smooth and pleasant to use, it seems to be the transitions between screens that brings this very slick and polished feel.
what would be the possibility given the increased graphics power and poke that the pc has of bringing something like this into the xbmc interface, it does feel very kinda static in comparison???.....just a thought , impossible?
da loony!

@knubile
well, be our guest :)
you can create your own mymusic.dll to do it like you want to.
it's all in c# so that should suit you fine right?
@looney
yeah, i know what you mean.
who know's. i also like this thing but at this point lets first get the features in.
@all
we need a name for the project on sf.
any good ideas?
woah. what's in c#? does the xbox support the .net platform?
MrMario64
2004-04-13, 23:02
uhm.....
we r talking about the xbmc program on the pc in this thread
hehehehe...
as for a name. htmc (home theatre media center). following the same lines as xbmc.
i suggest being careful about being a seperate project. it think it would be somewhat important to keep the pc version close to the xbox version. it is a port of xbmc. would you want it to stray on it's own path? not sure.
haha. stupid me. ok, so for the pc version. i guess you haven't released the source yet. is there an api for the mymusic.dll i must follow?
is the whole pc version of this done in .net? c# specifically?
i guess some details of the implementation of the port is what i'm asking for.
ooh. getting all excited now.
hold it, you guys missed the most valued reason for porting xbmc to pc, now i can make skins without having to upload them to the xbox to test them (what a pain that was). http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
im pretty sure that's what the guys were thinking when they decided to port it. http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
let me ask this. will this xbmc port to pc work on windows ce? if not, how easy would it be to port it to ce?
developers have gotten windows ce to run on the xbox now and i haven't check on this in a while yet so i don't know how active it is. but my idea was to run wince on my xbox and then run xbmc for ce on top of that. then install that baby in my car to have my entire music catalog available at all times. my main restriction regarding this is that i'm looking to get a touch-screen as i want to avoid using the controller. touch screens use mouse drivers within windows, so that's a possibility with ce. i just never found a good windows jukebox app until xbmc now ;)
any thoughts on all that?
Denhomer
2004-04-14, 00:10
as for a name i suggest things that are close to xbmc, like for example
home theatre box
home theatre media center as mentioned by someone else allready
pcmc
can't we have a vote about it ?
i have a stereo i designed and built based on the eden platform that's going in my car. in dash to replace my existing stereo. xbmc on pc is great for me, for that reason. i won't have to write my own media center for it. i don't like the existing ones. they're not really meant to be used by a touchscreen. xbmc has a nice simple interface and all it would take to be "finger friendly" is a different skin with really big buttons. the default skin almost seems good enough in itself though.
i'm sure it would help the skinners, but my goal is this in car stereo.
i guess the puspose of the pc port should be established asap. if it's to make development of the xbox version easier, then the mind set will be completely different from the purpose being a pc media center.
for example, it would have to use the same libraries, and could never venture from the xbox version too far.
i hope the purpose will be the latter. we can branch off a bit, but not get too out of hand. that way skinners can still take advantage of it maybe?
MrMario64
2004-04-14, 00:28
the purpose is making the best pc opensourced mediacenter.
not a tool to make life easier for the xbox version.
we want full raw mediacenter pc power in this baby.....
great!
so are you going to post the source somewhere? i'd love to get started on the music part.

did i understand correctly that this project uses sql-lite?
would it be to late to beg the developers to use xml instead?
the reason for this is because then people can right scripts to manipulate database files themselves without having to worry about sql-lite database engine. xml is a much more open standard. not to mention, wonderful things can be done with stylesheets etc.
if it's being developed in c# than working with xml files are a breeze.
just an opinion from developer to developer.

this probably doesn't belong here but i was thinking.
i just downloaded the xbmc pc from the xbox-scene site, and i was thinking... wouldn't it be more sensible for xbox-scene to make a tracker and throw this thing on the bittorrent network then leave it on the server and drain all their bandwidth which they have to pay for?
agreed about xml. but it would be much harder to query wouldn't it? or at least slower. or are you suggesting one of those xml query languages too?
xml and database are 2 completly different things
yes is an great standard for transmitting / storing data,
but it doesnt replace the need for a database.
databases are fast/great for storing & retrieving data, doing (complex) queries and maintaining data integrity. xml is not designed for this.
btw the database is using sql which is a standard also

a couple of feature suggestions
wma tag support
some way to save or specify views @ different levels of the file system, i.e., i want to be able to view all my artists as a list then go down to albums as icons (for album covers) then see tracks as a lists again.
that?s the main two things i seen after a quick play. but as i said before this rocks, keep it up

kanga, just do alt+enter and it will go to full screen.
supadawg > you can use whatever external player you want.
if it's a 1 go codec you want try ffdshow codec.
it has an internal player, but it's pretty buggy at this point.
loads of changes still to come for this.
also, currently this pc version only runs from c-drive.
silentyl > the cursor is being hidden on purpose, this is for people using remotes. the mouse should return when you move it.
also, you can set in file > setup what extentions it should show. you can set it for movies, music and pics.
and yes, the reboot reboots the pc, and shutdown shuts the pc down.
use the home button (with the house) to shutoff the app.
this is for htpc's to be able to shut your pc down with remote etc.
is the whole thing written in c#?
hmmm,
it doesn't work with me (on 2 pc's) i added music and movies path but no dice.
- tv does not work (cannot get into the submenu (if there is any :) )
- movies : cannot enter
- music: cannot enter
- pictures: can see my jpg's but can not view them (it throws me an error when i try the thumbnail thingy)
- weather is working
anyone tips ?
thanks in advance
oh.. my... god.... i am in love...
i´ve as until now been a myhtpc fanatic.. but this....this is just... awesome.. this is going to be great!, can´t wait to get home from my easter holiday to try out this on my htpc at home. i just tested a littlebit here right now, and one issue i came across is a problem with a swedish tvguide grabber called o2grabber (http://www.o2design.se/o2grabber)
it works great with myhtpc with initially also uses xmltv.. but when i try to update the tvguide via f3 (in xbmc) it just says
"tvguide import failed: invalid xml file". i don´t know if this is a o2grabber or a xbmc problem, but iv´e posted it to both developers now so i hope it can be solved...
i love the xbmc for the pc. i was thinking about doing something similar but got skiddish. i would love to see the source code for this thing.
did you use the dshownet.dll that was posted on codeproject? because it is very lacking in terms of directshow functions. i wanted to roll my own version of it to take advantage of dvd and other stuff like that.
supadawg: how did you fix the error? im getting the same error.

databases are fast/great for storing & retrieving data
i dont think you will find issues with speed using the .net xml namespace classes. especially since everything is done in memory and only written to the disk when needed.
if you are using ado.net to access the sql lite database, then everything is already in xml in memory, but people dont have access to it.
doing (complex) queries
with xml you can make relatively fast queries. while you might not get the power of overly complex outer joins, you can pretty much do all other searching.
another point i'd like to bring up, is that chances are, the application wont be executing complex queries anyways. it's gonna be pulling back lists of "media" (photo, video, music) and then displaying specific details on the media.
maintaining data integrity. xml is not designed for this.
i completely disagree with your point of data integrity. the sql lite engine is typeless, here is a snippet from the sql lite documentation:you can store any kind of data you want in any column of any table, regardless of the declared datatype of that column
with schemas, xml can hold data integrity very well, it was designed for this.
btw the database is using sql which is a standard also
correct. ansi sql is a standard, but the libraries needed to access the database are not. anyone with notepad can view and edit the data. no need for special libraries.
also, i brought up a point with mario in the htpcnews.com website, and that myhtpc currently meets the needs for many as it supports custom databases. people can browse internet radio stations, emulator roms, their offline dvd catalogs, or whatever other sort of "media" they want to come up with.
i think xml would be the way to go.
if this project does not work with xml, maybe it would at least be a good idea to be able to load data from various sources, including xml files and allow users to create "media" of any type.
just my 2 cents :)
i dont mean to offend anyone or pick on anyone with this post, just trying to provide some positive feedback. if anyone has read any of my posts in htpcnews.com you know my feelings on an open source project and how positive i think it would be to the htpc community.
hehe. i don't mean the binary version.
i ask for a link to download the sourcecode of the pc port.
here is a screenshot of my error:
screenshot removed to save bandwidth on my server
anyone else dealing with it? i got the latest .net (1.1) and running win xp pro.

where did you install it?
and was the folder empty before install?
installed in the c drive. ya the same error occurred when i first installed 4/12 release. i uninstalled that and then installed the 4/14 release and am getting same error.
im just installing the default "program files" directory.
i just tried again and installed in it c:\xbmc and still no go.

first, excellent work on the xbmc, the look and feel are great!
here is a real newbie question:
how do i change the tvguide to north american channels?
i have pulled down the tv_grab_na.conf using xmltv, but how do i get it to work with xbmc-pc?
any info would be helpful.

xbmc is looking good. can't wait to have a few months of development into it.
weather always shows uk. i have to go in and edit the xml file to get my city to show up.
have you announced xbmc on avs yet?

alt+enter
sometimes you need to do it twice.
let me start by asking a stupid question. what benefits will this app have for people who already use xbmc on their xbox as a htpc? or is this basically aimed at people who do not have an xbox?
second, the one thing i am thinking would rock with all of this, is seemless intergration with xbmc on the xbox and a pvr system running on the pc. i would love to see it work as if the xbox is a pvr (does that make sense?) basically, the pc is the one actually recording the programs, but all of it controllable through the xbox. what shows to record, playing recorded shows etc, all streaming from the pc. i am not sure if i explained this well, but it would be cool.
thanks

ok, new version.
when you r having problems with exiting the setup (file>setup) please delete the xbmc.xml in the root and try again.
changelog:
-------
14-04-2004: my tv : added : capture video (still very buggy)
14-04-2004: videoplayer : added : changed internal video player (can result in much cpu% used. will be fixed)
14-04-2004: general : added : changed app into a winform app. its not using directx anymore
14-04-2004: my music : fixed : scan music is now much faster
-------
so, please try the new internal player. enable this option in the file>setup > video section.
it can use some cpu%. will be fixed no worries :)
you will see that the player is pretty nice and it makes xbmc-pc act more like the xbox version.
try these keys when a movie is running:
a: pause (overlay icon goes wrong)
b: stop movie
x: switch to gui (shows small preview window with movie still running)
y: show osd (buttons messed up, working on that)
cursor keys : ff rw (more like skip+ and skip-)
i also checked that folder.jpg works.
so when you have a music album and have the album art of it, rename this .jpg to folder.jpg and place it in the folder of the album.
getting album info from internet also working fine, press f3 on a music file to grab it.
music database also fine, press the scan button in your music folder to scan all files. the tags will be stored in the database giving you sort functions on album/artis etc.
imdb lookup also fine, art from imdb also used as icon for the movie automatically. press f3 on a movie file to look for it.
------
all these buttons are not the final layout ofcourse.
these are basically still the buttons used on the xbox controller :)
okidoki...
here is the link to a nice mirror :)

yea, its really very nice. still quite a few bugs that need to be steamrolled.
lets not let this slow down progress on xbmc of course. :) as we already have so so so so many great media players for windows.... and only two for the xbox. ;)

do you have the fonts that r listed there?
install them or use a different one.
@mrmario64
now that ive got this thing going i gotta say this software is looking sweet. im using the internal player on my laptop and the cpu usage is just fine.
im planning on putting this in the car on my m10000 itx board w/ 256 ram so we'll see the usage on that cpu. i just hope it runs on win98, if not ill upgrade to win2k. ive been using myhtpc and always wondered whether xbmp or xbmc was a possiblity on my car instead because its just alot better.
i got a few questions about the skins. is it possible through skins to make the buttons and arrows bigger?
also is there a way to map a "back" button on screen or would that change have to occur in xbmc itself before it could be ported over to pc. the reason im asking all this because i have a touchscreen right now.
also for my purposes im not planning on using any part of the pvr and the weather seems like it might be out as well. is there anyway to make the loading the of those drivers etc that the sofware uses for those modules optional to make load time quicker?
anyway just wanted to say great work and it seems to be getting better daily! i think this could be one of the premier solutions for a computer once its fully ported over to the pc.
yea, its really very nice. still quite a few bugs that need to be steamrolled.

and no media player on the xbox that will play dvd's with menus over the lan!
it has to be one of the most often requested features, and i know it isn't a simple case of ticking an option box and re-compiling ;)
so, i'll stick a donation of $10 or €10 in the pot and i am sure others will if it can help get this one, really essential feature done :)
cheers, des.
for mrmario64 fonts were installed : no results
but good news release of 15/04/2004 is working fine : great !
/ignore this. just a test...
will there be the ability to control the pvr through the xbox version?
what i am thinking is maybe a "lite" version, that can be minmized to the system tray or something. the only function would be pvr capabilities, but completely controlled by xbmc on the xbox. is this realistic at all?
i would like to see it where the pc part is "invisable" to the end user.

nice idea....i think your on to something there andriod...
xbmc on xbox can be used to:
1. play everything(from xbox hdd/disc/share)
2. play all streams(from network share or internet)
3. play pc's capture-card video stream :) *drool*
4. option to record shoutcast on pc or xbox(might free up xbox's cpu/ram if shoutcast can be recorded directly on the pc, and shared - still play in live shoutcast feed tho) ...
and the xbmc-pc on pc can be used to:
1. play everything (on pc hdd)
2. record video from capture-card (pvr)
3. record internet video streams and shoutcast
4. optimize streaming to xbmc by incorporating a pc-xbox streaming protocol(like xbms\relax\ccxstream) directly into xbmc-pc .....this would allow an xbox to view anything viewed from a networked pc's capture card .. :)

i created a torrent for this file, so here it is.
xbmc pc april 14 2004 (http://hustlers.servemp3.com:6969/torrent.html?info_hash=40a55048bb7b5712d3ea3f31ddc 67d1ce88de3bb)
just click there and it should load up in your favorite bittorrent application. *i'm seeding it right now so it might go a little slow at first, but as more people download and seed it it'll go faster. *this should keep people's servers from overrunning their bandwidth limits. *:d
keep your bittorrent clients running to seed the file.

quick question, when playing music, is the box down the left hand corner with the music notes ment to show aulbm art?? if its not ment to it should anyway, keep up the good work.
also, when using song filenames instead of tags, it dosent show them in the scroll box up the top, there over on the side, just to let you know

kanga202,
yes, thats for album art.
you should do a scan and get your tags put in the database then.
then turn off tags in setup.
this will make it all faster, and you have all info you want.
no go to album view (i find that the easiest)
stand over an album and press f3
it will now search for the album art on the internet and show it next time for you when the song plays.

@all
if you r having problems with xbmc-pc not starting at all (error) be sure to get the latest dx9 from m$.
it has been tested and you really really need the latest directx.
kanga 202 > if you mean that you have a .jpg in your album folder then rename that jpg to folder.jpg and it will be used.
i'm not sure if you will see it in the bottom left corner yet. if not maybe it will in the future :)
if you want it now, go stand on 1 of the files in the album and press f3. you will not have to do it on all files in that album.
kanga202
2004-04-15, 10:16
yep there named right (folder.jpg), looks like anyway i do it no cover art, is there a size limit or a size they need to be?? anyway ill just wait till its supported, thanks for your help.
do you need people to report bugs or are you going to wait till it goes to souce forge?
MrMario64
2004-04-15, 10:22
ofcourse you can report bugs.
it's just easier to do when this program has it's own forum.
i still do not see why it won't work for you.
if the mp3's all have the same album info in the tag and you looked that album art up with f3 then at next play it should work.
i have all album art and all works fine for me.
so either your tags in the mp3 are not the same as the one you looked up the album with. or you did not scann all files?
kanga202
2004-04-15, 11:23
ok a few things i'm having problems with
scaning music is very slow, in fact anything where the little box comes up seems to hang (on a very fast machine).
in the pictures section, thumb nails wont generate, the diloge box apears with no writing on it and just hangs till i go back, ie right mouse. with the slideshow, the images are half off the screen, but if i click on the image, instead of doing a slide show, it shows up fine, and generates a thumb nail when i go back (just for that single image though)
i have tried the f3 on albums with both wma and mp3 but still no joy, as i said i get a review of the album and but thats it, go back and no cover art, in the album review screen, is there some thing i need to press to save or should it automaticly save the cover art?

the pics is a known bug thanx for the report.
@warmachine > you can set it in file>setup but it needs to be in windowed mode :) delete the .xml and at default it should be windowed.
@bedlam > thanx will try that tonight :)
@all > because of the state of flux xbmc-pc is in loads of bugs will be present, fixed and maybe return after a day. do not worry, this is normal for an app this age :)
im just so very impressed with the work-pace you are keeping!
and i for one thinks it´s fun to try out applications that are in alpha/beta stage and follow it as it blooms out into a beautiful fully functional app :)
i will do some more testing when i get home to my own and can try it out a little more extensively :)
btw, are you going to include medadata files? or is it the databases that should hold all of that info? since i´m using myhtpc right now and have all the movie-info already in .my files it would certainly be handy if there would be either some sort of import function or simply display the info in the .my files.
i wish i could help in some way but my coding skills is limited to a little php and the very little java i´ve learnt so far in this shitty course i´m taking at the univ :)
i have been an htpc user for more than a year now.
i have tried and used myhtpc and xlobby for more than a year.
i feel that this will be the ultimate htpc media center application for the future because of the opensource origin.
however at the moment i am missing two features that i already use in xlobby and mthtpc:
- custom databases for roms, games, dvd rips (maybe they are done but i don't know how to make them) as in myhtpc and xlobby
- skin editor as in xlobby (you just press a button and you can edit the current screen).
also i have already categorized game roms, movies, albums with pictures and folders.
generally folder view from myhtpc is the best way for me to browse throuh media.
it is a very simple structure where you decide which files to list and what extensions are the coverarts.
also you specify the player for that folder, and on a simple click you start films, roms, music albums.
can this be done with xbmc (pcmc) ?

our beloved frodo is !!!!!
i'm the dude that does bugtesting, post on forums.spreading the word and bores the programmer.
zerocool > hehehehehe
no, my tv isn't functional yet
it's a nice placeholder you are starting at :)
first recording stuff is made. then the viewing part
@bedlam > yeah, i love that to, great to fiddle with new beta stuff
@milanp > databse stuff can be developed later as a plugin. also, i do not know how myhtpc works but we will not mimic it.
you can very easily say what folder is for pic, what for video and what for music. you can give folders a nice thumbnal by naming it folder.jpg, you can also give a certain file a nice pic lets say i have myfile.mp3 then you can make a myfile.tbn, or myfile.jpg. album art downloaded from internet (very easily done) is automatically used for the files on that album.
also, searching on imdb with xbmc will make a new thumbnail from the cover art downloaded by xbmc. you can also do imdb search on a folder and the folder will get that pic as thumb.
you can do these things from within xbmc wich is very easy and powerfull. it makes databses of the searches you do on imdb mnaking browsing through your video collection a breeze.
try the way xbmc does it out.
it's human to make things the way they r used to. but that doesn't mean it's the best way.
thanx for testing, and what was said here does not mean things will be different. someone can make a plugin that does work like myhtpc. again, xbmc is very configurable in the future.
cheers,
MrMario64

fyi, i already given my suggestion, but internaly as i don't want anyone to 'steal' the domain for it if we decide to use it (or any other name)

@mrmario > i didn't have a 'general' entry in my.xml file.
so i added the tag to the end of the .xml file >> this crashed explorer when i ran the app!!
now when i run the app it doesn't crash explorer, but doesn't work in windowed mode either!
any other suggestions?!!
cheers,

this is only slightly off-topic, but it may be interesting to some here. i found this on slickdeals.net, and i know they'll only ship to those in the us and canada, but x10 has a promo on it's lola system. now the system may be good or crappy ( i don't care ), but what is cool is that you get an rf remote that uses the same driver as the ati remote wonder. so, possibly it could work with xbmc-pc (or whatever this app will be named) -- and it's free, you only pay for shipping. i'm not affiliated w/ them, and i get no commision or anything, just thought you'd be interested (i was, and i just ordered one). here's the link: x10 lola (http://www.x10.com/techliving1/index_lola.htm)
as a mega 180 owner, have been following your progress, and beta testing your releases with joy. each addition/change is convincing me you are heading in the right direction with this project. as each version gets slicker, the interface becomes better/more user friendly, a good 10-foot interface. could i suggest that you place some of the keyboard commands into a text file that gets installed with each beta? just easier to see what is working/not working, as a reread of this forum tends to confuse a user tracking the changes.
great work guys, keep it up....

@larrygb, how do you find the 180, had mine delivered from microdirect in the uk yesterday, built it last night and its doing my pvr work today, lovely bit of kit i think! cool and very quiet, wish the display would do more in pc mode though i know we can have the temp display but in hifi mode its like a firework display, scored high on the "missus" scale!
:-)
cant wait for the tv recording guys, nice one so far!
how about something like dmc - digital media center....
i've tried a few of other suggestions posted, and if you say them out loud, use them in a sentence, some are great, and others are tounge twisters.
i think you need something to reflect "the project" and be easy to communicate to others. no confusion!
otherwise, a great effort the team [frodo?] has been showing..... http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

i have problems to load my german tvguide.xml. xbmc says it is an invalid xml file. myhtpc imports that file with out problems.
i have put that file to download, so you can test it

is it possible to show special characters (öäüßöäü) in xbmc
thanks for that great program

this sounds like what i was talking about. just fully intergrated into xbmc and the pc version.
i quite like pcmc, with maybe an xb instead of a trademark logo. :d

i did not have any problems with it.

hi, i gather you are using the onboard video out? i wanted to do that but i was concerned about the tvout quality, so i threw an fx5200 in there without trying the onboard, you have made me think again and i am going to try it when i get a mo, free up that card for something else!!

people can join #xbmc-pc on efnet.
it is not officially registered , just a temp channel.
official channel will be here when the name is known

great, thank you.
quite impressed with the integration of the components, still thrasing out an issue with the pvr part of media center iii.
it seems to drop the recording app [pvr], shortly after it starts. thats why i've been lurking here, to see what alternatives are around, and very pleased with the progress "the team" is making. high hopes!
btw-what type of display do you have? it seems that the original artwork/photos on msi's website, show a display with wave like progressions accross the bottom of the screen, text/graphics on the top. my unit has, like a target on the right side, that explodes like the lights at a carnival ride. possible a different unit for the canadian market.
otherwise, temp/noise/style, all number 1!
loonytunes
2004-04-16, 02:36
i have the target also, display is a 32" samsung widescreen, looks great with an nvidia fx5200 but i could do with using that somewhere else so i am going to take mrmarios route and switch to the onboard.....
trying to get my xml listings working with the xbmc, i have a program that rips the data from digiguide then i load it into my snapstream box and works fine but cant get it into the xbmc as yet, still something to keep me up late :-) hate having to faff with xmltv, i like the way that xbmc handles all that for you it seems, and updates itself also, my mce box works like a dream and dosnt involve any messing with xmltv either...

was wondering if it was posible to set things up this way??
frist level view is a list of all your artists
http://users.bigpond.net.au/kanga202/xbmpartist.jpg
then the next view down is thubnails of all the albums you have by that artist
http://users.bigpond.net.au/kanga202/xbmpalbum.jpg
clicking on an album would then show you the track listing as a list
http://users.bigpond.net.au/kanga202/xbmptracklist.jpg
so if theres anyway to do this that would be great, also mario i could you check the pic i posted on the last page and let me know if its that lillte box with the arow next to it that should have the cover art, just wating to make sure we are talking bout the same thing, thanks mate

does any1 think that post-processing will be active in the pc version...i know it makes things worse in xbmc, but is it to do with low ram/cpu...maybe it will make an improvement to picture quality...?
would the mplayer core need to be ported too for this to work?

the reason post-processing makes things worse in xbmc is because of the mplayer core. they have a bug which makes things worse, once it gets fixed by mplayer it will be fixed in xbmc.
i haven't yet used xbmc on pc, but from what i hear post processing would be left up to ffdshow or something.

there's a 'bug' that you can't select other tv channel descriptions if you don't have descriptions (tv guide) for the channels before the channel you wan't to see.
maybe it sounds a little bit crazy *http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
so here's an example.
channel 1 (you have a tv guide)
channel 2 (you don't have a tv guide)
channel 3 (you have a tv guide)
channel 4 .....
that would mean that you can't see/select channel 3's tv guide and all that follow. so no up and down, only left and right *:)
i hope somebody understood and may explain it better *http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

another one but i think already known 'bug' is that after selecting the recording type in the tv selection, (while listening to music) it shows the music player & the album cover over the movie description, and they won't disapear.
just my two cents here....
first of all, i'm loving it (xbmc port to pc)! and wow is it moving along quickly.
i have seen in the todo notes and posted here that xbmc will not run off the d: drive. well, it does for me. i have one physical drive split into 3 partitions as below.
c: - windows xp pro
d: - all applications and such
e: - storage for all my digital files and pagefile
i am also having the same tv guide issue, where you can't scroll down to any channel that is below a channel that has no guide info. also after importing my xmltv guide file (whew it worked this time), i still have the european channels listed below my channels in the tv setup.

kanga, there allready is a "zoom" option in the internal player.
set your tv on widescreen (the stretch mode, not 16x9 mode)
first be sure to calibrate your screen by going to settings / my video/ calibration and calibrate the screen.
first the corners, then the position of subtitles, then the pixel ratio and then the osd position.
calibration will also correct the aspect ratio now. because you set the pixel ratio (the square during calibration) pics, album art, thumbnails and movies r corrected by this. this result in having the most filled screen in correct aspect ratio)
now play a movie(internal player) and press s.
this lets you switch between zoom, strech and normal.
and the thing you want "save view as for every folder seperately" can be done, is easy but a lot of work.
will make it in at some point.

i've been using a small lcd thermometer to read the outputs of the vents on the 180 [radioshack in/out]. putting the probe next to the cpu exhaust [~1" away] i find the temp to be about 5-6c less that the system temp. the surprising part is that doing the same on the psu vents, shows quite a higher temp output [from the psu itself, ~+4c. eg. cpu - 50, sytem - 40, cpu exhaust - 33, psu exhaust - 37]. so if you do take out the fx5200, try leaving the back plane cover off the agp port, [replace with some small fiberglass window screening], and dress the psu's internal wiring away from the cpu intake port, and up around the frame edge of the psu. that way the psu can draw its air in throught the back agp port, and exhaust it directly through its fan, and also does not draw air from the intake side of the cpu, allowing more cooling air to be pulled into the cpu. more air, lower temp, cooler cpu! if you cannot visualize, pm me your email address and i will send you a couple of jpg's on how i did it.
