View Full Version : Caching smb share directory lists?
the option to cache smb share directorylistings would help me a lot.
as it is now when i decide to browse my mp3 directory i have to wait until the directory listings are done. this gets very anoying since when i browse a folder within the mp3 directory and then goes back i have to wait for the listing again.
this only concerns folders with lots of files and stuff like my mp3 folder with 716 objects in it.
hope this feature isn't already added and im just too stupid to figure out how to use it :)

i used to get frustrated with this (i have around 15gb of music), so i reorganised my music. now instead of:
music
|-acdc
|-adema
|-beatles
|-massive attack
|-metallica
`-voodoo people
i now have my directories arranged like:
music
|-a
| |-acdc
| `-adema
|-b
| `-beatles
|-m
| |-massive attack
| `-metallica
`-v
`-voodoo people
it helps with faster navigation when using the remote (since you have no default quickscroll or page up/down keys), and it doesn't load huge dir lists each time you jump back a level. i know it's annoying to initially do, but it does kind-of tidy things up too.
i quickly wrote a program at the time to shift all the music round for me, but lost it when my os hdd crashed some time ago, otherwise i'd offer it for download.
just a quick question, have either of your tried using the database feature?
scanning all your music files and browsing them using the database avoids you having to list remote directories at all. it makes it much easier to list by album/genre/artist etc.
of course it also means your tags need to be exact, any mistakes and you'll need to correct them if you want it all to be neat and tidy.
this only concerns folders with lots of files and stuff like my mp3 folder with 716 objects in it.
the delay isn't caused by thumbnail scanning is it? in 01-26 cvs version there was an option included to disable scanning for thumbs on remote drives, this really sped up directory scanning (factor 10 at least).
since i don't use thumbs i have disabling looking for them and a dir with 1500 dirs in it only takes a few seconds for me now (used to take a minute).

much of the delay is in thumb scanning. we're looking into improving this at the moment.
as tslayer says - you should be using the database features - it's a miles better way to organize your music.
