Dharma RC1

Posted By: Team XBMC on Nov 18, 2010 in Site News

It’s that time again. After an extremely productive DevCon where we hammered out some nasty bugs, we’re proud to announce Dharma Release Candidate 1.

Major fixes since Beta4:

  • A fix for a problem when pausing/seeking. This was known to cause static or erratic behavior on some amplifiers.
  • Beta4 introduced a regression with Linux and Live users that led to broken or choppy playback. Please note that anyone upgrading to RC1 on these platforms is highly advised to remove ~/.asoundrc, and create a new one if you had done so previously.
  • The Bootable LiveCD script is now much more reliable. What a great way to install to a flash drive!

And a few new features:

  • After adding a source, you are now prompted to set content. This should be much more logical for new users.
  • New icons for the addon browser.

We are nearing release… Download RC1 now and keep the good reports coming. Let’s get Final out the door!

    Awesome, thanks all! Installing it now on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x64 and running the Shade skin!

    Cheers!

    Add a tick in System/Video/Playback/Play the next video automatically !!!

  • emil Nov 19, 2010

    Add that tick yourself or ask nicely. :)
    Anyway, great work guys! Xbmc is a rolemodel for other oss! \o/

  • Juan Nov 19, 2010

    Love XBMC. Thx!

  • ANDY Nov 19, 2010

    Hey guys,
    really good work. I love XBMC. It is the best media center ever.

    I am just curious if someone knows if the final release will work as a PVR Frontend (like the pvr-testing2 ppa)

    salute

  • Rormeister Nov 19, 2010

    Well done guys! Very impressive achievement!

  • Red Tape Media Nov 19, 2010

    @ANDY No it will not have any new features from now until final. There is a lot of work left to do on the PVR testing branch and it has yet to be even merged into the trunk (main code).

  • Anonymous Nov 19, 2010

    @ANDY
    No, it won’t. That is scheduled for a future (possibly the next?) release after Dharma.

  • Evan Nov 19, 2010

    dumb question, but how do you re-create the asound.rc file?

  • KiMs Nov 19, 2010

    A fix for a problem when pausing/seeking. This was known to cause static or erratic behavior on some amplifiers.

    Does anybody have the bugid for this? or do anybody know what the fix includes?

  • ANDY Nov 19, 2010

    @Red Tape Media and Anonymous
    Thank you for your quick response. It’s a pitty that this feature wont be in the final release. I’m waiting for this a long time. I already bought the necessary hardware.
    Ok but at least now I know it. I waited for updating my media center until the final release of Dharma. I think I have to switch to pvr-testing2 now.

    Thanks

  • NebulaOdyssey Nov 19, 2010

    Hey guys, an everyone else. Great work absolutely liv XBMC been using it since xbox days. Great work ad can’t wait for Final.

  • Jamesb Nov 19, 2010

    As always guys – a superb job!

    I just have a quick question, how come there are still 10 open tickets against Dharma? Are you waiting to hear reports whether they are truly fixed in this release before you close them off?

  • Babalu Nov 19, 2010

    Awesome!!!!
    Thanks!

  • Danny Nov 19, 2010

    “A fix for a problem when pausing/seeking. This was known to cause static or erratic behavior on some amplifiers.”

    Thank you for this highly welcomed fix <3 .

  • jaken Nov 19, 2010

    First of all thanks for all the hard work!

    I was just wondering if there will be a post about what was discussed during the devcon? I’m eager to know what direction xbmc is planning on taking.

    Thanks again!
    Jake

  • CrazyDave Nov 19, 2010

    “A fix for a problem when pausing/seeking. This was known to cause static or erratic behavior on some amplifiers.”
    Also a thx from me -> now my Amplifier hopefully will not hang up again :)

  • Draco Nov 19, 2010

    Love the add, that set content will popup when source is added!

  • Anonymous Nov 19, 2010

    Awesome work, just one question. I have beta 4 and some additional software installed. Can I remove the beta and replace it with the RC without wiping out everything?

  • zag2me Nov 19, 2010

    “After adding a source, you are now prompted to set content. This should be much more logical for new users.”

    Huge useability improvement”

    Would be even better if it checked to see how your movies/tvshows were organized and automatically selected the correct option.

  • Mark Nov 19, 2010

    Keep up the good work guys. I am looking forward to the final release. I have a whole new set-up waiting for it! I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve waiting for Santa Claus………Sorry, I tend to ramble when I get excited!

  • Andreas Nov 19, 2010

    Is there any plans to handle multiple xbmc-installations in a better way? I was thinking of like a server backend (Database) and a client frontend. Right now I am adding 2 xbmc installations in the house but it is alot of work keeping them synced.

  • jimmy Nov 19, 2010

    Where’ s RC-1 for win32

  • Richard Ayotte Nov 19, 2010

    Thank you! This will be a fantastic release.

  • Markos! Nov 19, 2010

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • mwkurt Nov 19, 2010

    Congrats on the new release. You’re almost there! Have there been any fixes to the “smart playlist” yet?

  • NeuGier Nov 19, 2010

    Great. So what is the easiest way to upgrade from XBMC-Live-b4 to XBMC-Live-RC1

  • Ceddy Nov 19, 2010

    I hope this unbreaks XBMC remote for android.
    90% of the controls (like pause.. directional buttons,etc) stop working when I went from B2 to B4. Alot of force closes as well.

  • priamida Nov 19, 2010

    I’m with NeuGier. How to upgrade? I have other software installed and would rather not wipe everything out. Thanks a lot, XBMC absolutely rocks!!!

  • raven Nov 19, 2010

    @NeuGier
    just ssh to the box
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade – Y
    and there you are

  • SynapseAttack Nov 19, 2010

    @NeuGier
    SSH into the box.
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade

    That has worked for me on the previous updates between betas I believe.

  • Otyg Nov 19, 2010

    Awesome news!

    Is it OK to do a ‘apt-get update && apt-get upgrade’ on Live B4?

  • Roy Nov 19, 2010

    Your efforts are appreciated!
    Much XBMC love from Israel.

  • Derek Nov 19, 2010

    Much love coming from Canada!

    Been using XBMC for years on my XBOX and my PC until two days ago when my nephew accidentally broke my XBOX!

    Exactly 15 minutes after it broke, i went out and bought a ZOTAC mini-pc with Dharma B4 to replace it!

    I can’t live without XBMC, you guys rock!

  • Tony Nov 19, 2010

    Hello, looking forward to the RC-1 for Mac OS X.

  • bugsy Nov 19, 2010

    Awesome!!!!! Will an svn update bring down RC1 or another version?

    On FC13 so need to build from source. Ty

  • francis henriksen Nov 19, 2010

    Nice work guys,

    One feature which I would find useful is to set some mark as “watched” in the folders of the movies/series. When reformatting this will be gone unfortunately. It would be an option when “export video library”.

    Other than that I cant set my finger of something :) .

  • Lloyd Nov 19, 2010

    Fantastic! Keep up the good work.

  • Johnny Nov 19, 2010

    RC1 Live CD appears to work fine on my machine – 2.2GHz single core Intel, Nvidia GF2600, and SB Audigy (digital out). Looking good for the release.

  • Evan Richardson Nov 19, 2010

    @thefreedom

    That’s what playlists are for

  • John Nov 19, 2010

    I dont know but I cannot get any movies with DD to play with sound ever since the first beta and when I change it to LPCM the channel mapping is wrong. I try to do the mapping fix and after that every time I try to play a movie, it reboots. Not a nice experience at all.

  • Justin Nov 19, 2010

    Andreas you can already do this using a MySQL database and some stuff in advancedsettings.xml. Details are in the forum somewhere :)
    @Andreas

  • Matt Nov 19, 2010

    Just upgrade. Working great so far. My asound.conf file works great with it and I didn’t need to change a thing. You guys rock!

  • Dave Nov 19, 2010

    Great news, love XBMC! I’m still on Camelot with XBMC Live on my Acer Aspire Revo, does Dharma handle AAC 5.1 audio through HDMI? I can never get it working correctly.

  • Anonymous Nov 19, 2010

    I want to ask the same question as Evan, how do I recreate .asoundrc?

  • Anon Nov 19, 2010

    Have to ask the same question as Evan, how do I create new .asoundrc?

  • Jokono Nov 19, 2010

    Thank you! Performance is much improved over beta4 (live).

    Did LCD/VFD go away? I can’t find it in the menu.

  • Anonymous Nov 19, 2010

    @Jokono

    I noticed they removed it in the changelog, reportedly because it was confusing to many

  • Yahtween Nov 19, 2010

    I’d like an option to manually check for updates because on my Atom-powered HTPC, if I’m watching a movie and XBMC starts searching for updates in the background, my movie playing experience suffers and becomes choppy.

  • Guillermo Nov 19, 2010

    Quick Question,

    Congrats on the great work so far!
    What would you recommend for upgrading from Camelot to RC1.

  • teegee543 Nov 19, 2010

    Is there any chance for rewinding to be fixed? My videos rewind much faster than 2x with one press and sometimes jump back more than a minute randomly.

  • RyanG Nov 20, 2010

    Great work guys!

    Any chance you can check out bug http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/10404 – I can’t play my games whilst someone else watches a video because of it. :(

  • PatOso Nov 20, 2010

    XBMC is an orgasm for the eyes, great work and thank you very much.

    Have a look here: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=85730&highlight=lcd+dharma
    Hopefully the “enable LCD/VFD” option will be back by the final relese, in the meantime use the workaround posted in the above Forum thread.

  • AAAA Nov 20, 2010

    what is that ?
    no news about shoutcast improving ?
    We are still waiting for the fix for ice streams

  • Jokono Nov 20, 2010

    @Quintixbox
    THANK YOU! I was hoping there was, at least, a workaround.

  • Lars Nov 20, 2010

    Hi, what about the sound?
    The sound is very quiet on my htpc with RC1 (as like in all beta’s). Any advice what can I do with this? I did not find any option to increase the volume settings. I have to set the receiver output at 45%, to normally watch movies, but the problem is that also I listen to the radio on this equipment (receiver) with output max on 25-30% and like sometimes I forget to turn down the volume turning on the radio ….

  • Mike Nov 21, 2010

    Does anyone know what happened to the PVR that was promised back in March for Dharma. Was really looking forward to this feature but there has been no mention in the betas or RC… apart from that it’s looking like a great release, nice work

  • Qu3 Nov 21, 2010

    Keep up the good work!
    ThankS!

  • JDizzy Nov 21, 2010

    Anyone experiencing problems with the Audio OSD menu while in Movies not responding?

    You need to use Putty, log in to the HTPC, run alsamixer and increase the master volume and enable the spdif channels

  • Zaxxan Nov 21, 2010

    RC1 seems to be a lot better than the last 2 beta’s. The delay on the remote after resume is now fixed. Keep up the good work!

  • Lance Nov 22, 2010

    Seems to be a lot more buggy. The SVN repo is a lot harder to navigate. Also, I can not add sources or go into the addons through the settings. It seems to be a step back

  • theuni Nov 22, 2010

    @Zaxxan
    No need for all that. Sound mixer script is included. No need to leave xbmc. Just look in ‘programs’.

  • Ronald Nov 22, 2010

    @Lance

    Obviously you have not downloaded XBMC 10.0 RC1 (Dharma) but the old XBMC 9.11 (Camelot) release.

    Dharma does not have the “SVN repo” as it has been fully replaced by the Addons Manager :P

    So it is no wonder that installing seems to be a step back to you if used to use a Dharma Beta before ;)

  • texasfrank Nov 22, 2010

    Where did the “Movies” main menuitem go? “TV Shows” is still there but I can’t get Movies even in “Videos” Library Mode. Re-importing 340 Movies into the database and manually assigning titles and editing thumbnails is gonna be a bitch…

  • Axionwrx Nov 22, 2010

    @JDizzy

    Yes, i have the same problem. It prevents me to change any audio setting and enable/disable subtitles.
    The only solution i found is to use the keyboard instead of the OSD.
    I hope it will be fixed with the next release.

  • spiff Nov 22, 2010

    @ lance – good. cause you must have grabbed camelot. that being a step back is a good thing ;)

    I tried the new mixer but there didn’t appear to be any options for switching on the spdif outputs, unless I’ve missed it?

    I have the same problem. When library updates my sound gets distorted on Atom-based HTPC (Zotac ION 330). Though I have started updating library manually and then switched to watching movie. I think you can disable automatic updates in the system settings.

    Hello,

    How using the CD of 10rc1 CD-live version to update an previously installed 10b4 CD-live version ?

    I only founded the clean install process, destroying the previous installed version

    Thanks for any help :-)

  • Anonymous Nov 23, 2010

    Installed RC1 last night for Mac OS and now when it scans it’s downloading every TV Show in existence not just what is in my library. Am I missing something?

  • Anonymous Nov 23, 2010

    Strike my previous comment it actually downloaded content just for TV Shows that have a number in the name which to me seems even stranger. Anyway anyone else seen this occur?

  • Anonymous Nov 23, 2010

    @Mike

    @Mike Check this out http://www.scintilla.utwente.nl/~marcelg/xbmc/prebuild.html for PVR goodness. Brilliant developer with superquick replies to feature/bug requests pretty polished stuff!

    PS3 Remote Application 1.0 Beta not work in XBMC Dharma RC1, hic hic!

  • Hoschie Nov 24, 2010

    Hi, first i have to say – this version is much better than the one before. very good work
    but i`ve tested it and the protable mode ist much slower than the normal mode , xbmc boot takes twice so long and open the movie database first takes over 10 sec.

    cpu/ram is under half of activity

    i use the night skin :d wonderful (but be attention with loading logos the can’t be deleted and after new applied ^^)

  • Magnus Nov 24, 2010

    Hi and thanks for a nice and more stable version1

    I have notice some possible improvements:
    1. When using playlists, the songname is not displayed but rater a hex code (01$88576.mp3)
    2. In some modes, using the remote control it is not possible to escape using the exit buttom so I need to use my mouse instead to hit the X. One example is if I accidentally hit the “power off (shut down, suspend, etc..” buttom where I can´t undo without streching for my mouse. This problems also occurs in situations like add source etc…
    3. In 9.11 it was possible to add links to plugins (now add-ons) directly under videos, music and pictures which provided a direct acess to live tv stations and shoutcast etc. It would be nice to have that feature again.
    4. I like the “favourite” bar where i can add shortcuts, but I think it would be more convinient to have it located in the same way as video, picture and music to provide faster and more logical acess
    5.when typing search strings or lable links from my keyborad and hit “enter” a new character pops up rather then executing my command

    Thanks again for a very nice program!
    Magnus

  • M_Kant Nov 25, 2010

    Still having problems with alt+tab out of XBMC. With B3, B4, and now RC1 under Win7, the entire machine becomes unresponsive (even to ctrl+alt+del) showing only a black screen for ~6 minutes after alt+tab or alt+esc in XBMC.
    I was hoping it would be fixed with this RC1, am I the only one having this problem? It never happened with B1 or B2.

  • muzza Nov 26, 2010

    Nice to see the video no longer launches with a speedup after unpause, however it still does this to some extent after a seek. My good old xbox1 xbmc still wins in this department. Nice to see remote respoinsive after wake from sleep. Finally it’s feaisible to run Live edition.

  • Dharma Nov 26, 2010

    Just installed Dharma RC1 Live on my Zotac ZBOXHD-ID11-U and it worked out of the box. The only problem I noticed is that zeroconf support is not installed as it should be. “sudo apt-get install avahi-daemon” fixed it.

    Great stuff!

    Do we need to make a ticket or something, or does mentioning it here work?
    (Can’t disable/enable subtitles, or change audio and have no keyboard)…. running AppleTV Dharma RC1 and Transparency skin.
    Video OSD works fine.

    In some folders I don’t get a picutre preview on the directory icon. I think it is because I have less the three or four picuters in that directory.
    This also happens in the video directory.
    Can this be solved? Can I run a scan to have thumnails loaded on all the folders?

    Another issue that would be nice is a jukebox view for music and movies like Boxee. Can this be done?

    Many thanks,

    I tried the Dharma release candidate in windows apparently the web interface is having some issues it works part of the time then seems to lock up the application or just blocks it (I did read the docs about the pw issues and firefox). I tried your older stable candidate and noticed the layout tho almost identical is a bit more elegant than the release candidate. I checked out a bunch of your docs and it was difficult to determine how to do some things that could be much more straightforward.. ie like add in a new rss feed. Gmail checker settings didn’t seem to work properly either (you may also want to note the proper format you’re expecting for the username). All these being said I’m not the best coder in the world although I manage. I have coded in python, c++ and java in the past, just not recently. I still remember enough of my python and java to be somewhat useful. How can I help out?

    @vic1ous

    I noticed you guys had “Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver” in joystick.Microsoft.Xbox.360.Controller.xml
    but my driver is called “Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows” not sure if that could be causing any problems but I figured I would let you guys know

    I’ve installed XBMC Live Dharma RC1 on my Asrock ION330HT. I managed to get remote control, wireless network and sound through HDMI working after a quick search in the Forums. Pity it’s not easier for users who are not comfortable with the command line.

    I’m struggling to have Samba working. It seems to run, but from my WinXP machine I see the shares but cannot access them: I get prompted for user/password and nothing makes it happy (even using the username@xbmclive format). I’ve seen some answers on the internet but none of the proposals seem to work for me so far.

    Any ideas?
