Dharma Beta 4

Posted By: Team XBMC on Oct 29, 2010 in Site News

Well, beta 3 had a few regressions. So rather than moving along to rc1, we decided to throw out one last (we hope!) beta. There a few things to take note of:

  • Live now contains an Audio Mixer. You’ll find it in the Programs section. Non-Live users (Linux and OSX) may install it from the add-ons browser. This replaces the previous scripts that attempted to set volume levels. As a result, volumes may be low or muted by default, but now you can adjust them with your remote.
  • After installing a skin from the add-on browser, you’ll now be prompted to switch to it. It just makes sense.
  • Don’t you hate it when programs add a shiny new feature and force you to use it, even if you absolutely hate it? We do too! If you don’t want to be notified about add-ons at all, now you can disable notifications completely. Just go to the add-on browser options and turn them off.
  • Ubuntu Maverick packages are now ready for testing.

Strings have been frozen for a while already, but we decided it was important enough to get those settings in for Dharma. So translators please take notice.

This late in the release cycle, we are hoping that beta4 is relatively boring. If all goes well, we’ll push out an RC1 soon.

Sounds great :) I’ll certainly take it for a spin as soon as the beta 4 for windows is uploaded! (right now only available for linux and osx, it seems)

  • theuni Oct 29, 2010

    @timdog82001
Hmm? Clear your cache. It’s there.

  • Anonymous Oct 29, 2010

  • proson Oct 30, 2010

I have Lucid installad on a SSD, should I upgrade to Maverick now where Dharma supports Maverick (beacuse of TRIM support)?

  • TheJumper Oct 30, 2010

is the beta 4 live cd now with maverick?

  • Juan Oct 30, 2010

Thanx for your work guys. No problem adding this new beta. It’s more important to reach a really stable version so everybody can enjoy it. Its the better application for a HTPC, and when you add PVR support in next version will be awesome. Thx again!

  • AAAA Oct 30, 2010

mms/shout streams still have the problems – there’s several tickets and topics on forum

Will fix such bugs with mms and shout streams in RC1 ?

  • Mindzai Oct 30, 2010

    @ Linux users

Yes, upi can use apt to update:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade

  • Mindzai Oct 30, 2010

upi = you – i moved one key too far to the right!

  • defiler Oct 30, 2010

I only just updated to b3 two days ago. Oh well, it wasn’t exactly difficult so I’m sure I can run through the hardship again! Really looking forward to a final release. Is this still 10.5? :D

    Okay – I’ll get my coat…

  • beckysat Oct 30, 2010

I don’t know where I can publish Bug report.
I’ve just try the Beta 4 in Live Mode, and the shutdown or restart from XBMC Interface don’t work… This is a long time bug…
Thanks to some one to test this also and report bug.

I’ve noticed this as well, it was ok on beta 2, but beta 3 and 4 are slow to respond after waking from suspend mode. Beta 2 seems to be more bug free than the later versions.

  • Lukas Oct 30, 2010

I Can´t wait for the final version. Thank you for the great job!

  • daemox Oct 30, 2010

Great job and thanks guys, installing it now on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x64!

Running beta 4 from live cd as well as installing it to the SSD drive on my ASROCK ion 330 HTPC does not work. Live CD and install on disk get stuck at the loading screen: “XBMC media center” logo. Anyone else with the same problem?

  • ibukun Oct 31, 2010

currently using dharma 3 and can’t open any of my video add ons, it tells me nothing found wat can be the problem.

Question – XBMC 9.11 the view port always display the picture in the thumbnail when I high light a show in the list but since I’ve install the beta this has stop working on all my MPEG recordings but works with all the AVI files, does anyone have any suggestions as to why?

  • dj Nov 01, 2010

Question – In 9.11 this worked but since beta it has stop working. When I highlight a Recording it would disply a thumbnail/viewport with a picture from the recording but since I’ve installed beta this has stop working. All my recordings are MPEG2 but all the avi files I have still display a image in the little thumbnail/viewport when I hightligt it in my list. Does anyone know why this is?

  • Itzik Nov 01, 2010

Thank you very much for all the efforts and time you invest, waiting anxiously for the rc1.

  • Arun Nov 01, 2010

    Hi,

anyone knows how to add tv series and movies from addons to your main library..

  • Arun Nov 01, 2010

is it possible to boot apple tv with live xbmc using pen drive?

  • enrique Nov 01, 2010

Hi, I got the same problem as Capricorn, “unable to connect to remote server”. I tried it on windows 7 and having also problems with live beta 4 live on my Zotac ion 330, the drivers aren’t working out of the box :O

Besides that, this release is looking good man. XBMC is the real deal on HTPC.

  • jon Nov 02, 2010

I installed Dharma Beta 4 on my Shuttle XS35GT with Windows 7 32bit OS and it works very well – Beta 3 had some freeze issues on the same system with the same drivers installed.

    Regards,

    Jon

  • wilson Nov 04, 2010

    Hi…
Since Beta3 XBMC Live restart (not the OS just XBMC) that is when I am runing any Plugin… when I stop any Video…. Any Idea…
    Thanks

  • TheGeebs Nov 05, 2010

Windows update just installed Windows Live Essentials which is known to block SMB access. After I uninstalled it XBMC was able to connect to my PC to stream videos

  • Razvan Nov 05, 2010

Hi! Ever since i updated to beta 4 i noticed some subtle stuttering both of video and audio. Anyone else has this problem?

  • forcedalias2 Nov 05, 2010

Using Zotac IONITX-A-B — the audio is not working. Was working on Beta 3.

  • aeop Nov 05, 2010

    @enrique
I would check Add/Remove Programs for “Windows Live Sign-in Assistant” as that has been know to cause problems in the past. Experienced it myself and it was a PITA to track down. Luckily a random google result brought it to my attention, but it is not something you would think to cause problems. A new version of Windows Live Essentials 2011 just came out, and it is possible that Windows automatically updated/installed it without your knowledge, and by default sign-in assistant gets installed.

  • StarChild Nov 06, 2010

Seems pretty good to me. The only major bug I know about is the audio bug. After that, it’s more bugfree that I have seen xbmc in official releases in a long time. Good work!

  • Razvan Nov 06, 2010

    @Razvan
Nevermind. I fixed it by uninstaling and instaling xbmc again.

  • tenorism Nov 08, 2010

    Same here

  • Zaxxan Nov 09, 2010

    forcedalias2 :

I had the same problem with a ionitex-f-e, I had to use Putty to run alsamixer and enable the s/pdif output and increase the volume levels.

  • jokono Nov 10, 2010

Like many here, I’m getting intermittent stuttering during playback (as well as sluggish response from input devices). This seems to be due to the fact that the xbmc.bin process (I’m running live) is taking about 50% of the CPU while idling. In Camelot, it hovers around 4%. This can be easily seen by ssh-ing in and running top.

I’m sure you geniuses already know this, but I thought I’d chime in and add my $0.02.

  • Chris Nov 11, 2010

I’m loving this program! Especially with the iPhone app ;)

On a less positive note :(

It seems that mkv playback has not improved
Subtitles have no end time in mkv playback.
    XBMC sometimes freezes

  • Anonymous Nov 11, 2010

Hi, does the DXVA acceleration work on Intel G45 chipsets?

About XBMC

XBMC is a free and open source media player application developed by the XBMC Foundation, a non-profit technology consortium. XBMC is available for multiple operating-systems and hardware platforms, featuring a 10-foot user interface for use with televisions and remote controls. It allows users to play and view most videos, music, podcasts, and other digital media files from local and network storage media and the internet.
