Team-XBMC is proud to announce the second cross-platform Beta version of XBMC Media Center for Linux, Mac OS X (Leopard, Tiger, and Apple TV), Windows, and Xbox, in preparation for the upcoming point release of XBMC, code named ‘Atlantis‘.

New in this release is multi-core video decoding for Windows users, courtesy of a rebuilt FFmpeg by WiSo and AreaScout, and XBMC now runs on the Apple TV via the easy to use USB installer created by Scott Davilla. We have also updated the skins (PM3.HD, Project Mayhem III, and MediaStream by Team Razorfish) to their latest versions.

With almost 80 tickets closed, and close to 200 commits to SVN since Beta 1 was released, Beta 2 represents a clear step forward in terms of stability. Thanks to all in the community who have made this possible by reporting bugs and suggesting improvements!

Go grab XBMC ‘Atlantis’ Beta 2 and let us know how it goes!

Yours sincerely / Team-XBMC

  12. 64bit Ubuntu version still bombs when attempting to add a Samba video source via the GUI. Also, via the default skin, can’t figure out how to switch to Fahrenheit for weather. Weather does work though.

XBox version appears to rock though.

  19. Thanks guys,
I’ve been a fervent XBMC user since Frodo’s XboxMediaPlayer times and seen this app mature into the best media related software out there, period. It puts Microsoft’s MCE and other commercial software to shame. Even great open source beauties like MythTV, Freevo and Frodo’s own MediaPortal still have a long way to go in terms of media format compatibility, ‘out of the box’ usability and sheer UI beauty.
Keep up the good work, I’m sure there’s a whole community out there sharing my eager anticipation for the final Atlantis release.
Another huge vote of gratitude goes to TECH, who’s freed us affectionado’s of the burden of compiling from source and/or IRC downloads with a long series of fantastic builds.
Now XBMC has been released from the shackles of the superb but unfortunately outdated xbox hardware, we can once again start dreaming of XBMC with capture card and PVR support (hint, hint)…
Regards & greetz from the Netherlands,
    Quintixbox

  20. Thanks guys I’ll be pushing this on my computer as soon as I can. I really love the compatibility and beauty of XBMC and it is so good that it even got the financial controller to approve the build of a HTPC. Thank you again!!

  21. does xbmc receive TV singal ? if my pc is equipped a tv card

    Comment by adrianmak — October 8, 2008 @ 2:15 pm

  22. @Quintixbox: What would be awesome is if Frodo started working with the XBMC team again to add Tuner/PVR support to XBMC. I have friends that use XP MCE just because of its ease of use (and overall ease of setup, although we’ve hacked it up a bit), and they’d switch to XBMC in a heartbeat if it had tuner/PVR support just because of how easy and well-supported XBMC is. Keep it up team, you’ve really got something good here.

Who’d have thought that the best-running and looking HTPC UI would be Open Source?

    Comment by muriani — October 8, 2008 @ 3:30 pm

  23. Awesome job guys! This was one of the easiest upgrades ever. I was finished removing beta 1 and installing beta 2 in about 5 minutes, with keeping my database. A way better experience then I had with simular products like MediaPortal.

No TV support needed here. I prefer to download my episodes… way easier than having to mess with TC-guides, commercials, etc…

I could think of some cool plug-ins though or at least something better to handle installing (or finding) the scripts. That’s one area are where I feel Mediaportal and MCE is still stronger. But aside from that, XBMC is now the default HTPC program on my system.

  28. I tried to run XBMC over RDP on WinXP and got following error:
An unhandled win32 exception occurred in XBMC.exe [1664]. Just-In-Time debugging this exception failed with the following error: No installed debugger has Just-In-Time debugging enabled…

I also got Problems with VNC. It does not produce an error but it does not start either.

Without RDP or VNC it works fine;)

  33. Still the best and even better than MS Media Center, works flawlessly, wife friendly and supports pretty much everything I have ever thrown at it. If I ever get round to replacing my xbox with a HTPC I will be running XBMC on it.

    Just wanted to say thanks!

  38. What a great piece of software. I`m trying to get a substitute htpc software since MS failed us all over here in the UK with the TV Pack 2008 fiasco. I will install Atlantis as my HTPC software as soon as it becomes available. Would like to suggest if possible a way to use an external player ie. PowerDVD to play blu ray and hddvd content if possible, using PowerDVD HD decoders.
If Atlantis gets to support all the tv features out there ie. DVB-T, DVB-S/S2, CI support , CAM support, MHEG, EPG etc… you would defenitly do a lot of people happy over europe and the UK. Congratulations to the developers of this great piece of software. Keep up with your amazing effort and work.

    Comment by Sevla — October 23, 2008 @ 6:50 pm

  39. @Uguth: XBMC requires OpenGL. I have a Via mini system and the Via video card on board has zero OpenGL support, could not run XBMC. That may be your problem.

    Comment by Roger — October 24, 2008 @ 7:54 pm

  40. Oh yeah, as soon as I get access to my wife’s old computer (she just got a quad-core cpu, 6gb of ram beast) I’m snagging the ATI card that SHOULD be able to run XBMC, and shutting off the sad Via onboard video. XBMC on 2 xboxes and the mini computer, YAY!

    Comment by Roger — October 24, 2008 @ 8:02 pm

  41. One Sentence: You guys Rock!

I recently discovered XBMC while trying to find a decent media centre solution. XBMC gave my old xbox a new lease on life. It is now sitting under my tv with a 500GB HDD purring away and catering to all our AV needs. Awesome work guys, respect.

I am singing your praises to anyone that will listen - this software is just too good to be kept a secret :)

    Keep it up.

Oh and should you need any German/Austrian Language support don’t hesitate to get in touch ;)

  45. Any reason why the download / filesize has gone from 43.2MB for the Win32 version with Beta1 to 77.2MB in Beta2?

    Comment by Chilling_Silence — November 6, 2008 @ 8:45 am

  46. Best Ever…
    PM3.HD is ace,so much faster.
only additions to it I would want…
Music Video player? keeps playing videos like music player, maybe even whole seasons of TV shows, for the super 19 season Simpsons marathon… even just to allow queuing of some kind???
I would love to see a built in BitTorrent program + RSS action,

would get all the best TV episodes with no hassles. I wouldn’t have to leave the couch… ever…

    Truly AWESOME… no Legendary!!!!

  53. My XBOX’s DVD dying. I could easily switch XBMC to a PC but want to maintain the ability to play old games and run DVDs from one box. Is anyone “refurbishing” old XBOXs commercially (with a warranty)? How many features do I lose if I switch to an XBOX360 + TVersity setup?

    Comment by pat — February 16, 2009 @ 6:05 am

  54. Thanks for the good work everyone! Lovin it on my Apple TV. Only front end I’ve found so far that handles my 400GB+ of music (20,000+ songs) and lets me sort through it easily.
