Dharma Branched

Last night jmarshall created the Dharma branch, which will eventually become the stable Dharma release. That means that from this point on, only fixes and important updates will go into the release branch, while trunk remains open for business. So for all the skinners, translators, and add-on developers, you may now consider the Dharma branch frozen. Please begin submitting your translations via trac. We’ve begun evaluating bugs and deciding on blockers for release, so the first beta should be out relatively soon.

Keep submitting those add-ons! We understand that several of the developers have wanted to wait until feature-freeze and translation-freeze, so now is the time to get them finished up and submit them to the official repo. Please use the mailing list when you’re ready.

Also, please be sure to use the official nightly builds and not others that you may find. We have no control over the build process that others may use, so bug reports and nags should only be filed against our builds. Note that nightly builds will switch to the Dharma release branch.

Official XBMC Remote for Android

Nearly a year ago, topfs2 started working on a remote client for Android phones and was shortly joined by me, not even having my phone yet. The project grew rapidly and soon the_alien and mikkle joined the show. While the app was always freely available via Google Code, we’ve decided today that it’s time for a public beta release on Android Market. It’s still not final, but we’ve received much positive feedback from users, and after all a Market distribution is much more convenient for both us developers as well as the users.

There is still a lot to do, but the basics should work fairly well. Besides using the app as pure remote control with the look of the famous Xbox DVD Dongle, you’ll be able to browse your music, movie and TV shows library. Browse through your albums by genre or artist, select or queue an album without even turning on your television? No problem. Make incoming calls automagically pause the film you’re watching? Go to settings and check the option. You can find a complete list of features on the project page. Also check out the screenshots gallery.

You’ll need at least Android v1.5 (Cupcake) and XBMC v9.11 (Camelot) in order to run it correctly. Also, XBMC’s coming up Dharma release will be fully supported. If you have a suggestion or find a bug, please use our issue tracker and not the comments in Android Market. If you need discuss other stuff you’re not sure about, use our forum. We are looking forward to your comments and suggestions!

Submit your Add-Ons

It’s been quite a while since we’ve posted an update, but rest assured we’ve been very busy behind the scenes. The new add-ons system is now nearly complete, the only missing piece is the add-ons themselves. So let’s fix that!

Here’s a quick refresher course for those who may have missed it. We have added an add-on browser to XBMC, similar to those found in Firefox or Chrome. In addition, we have created a repository for hosting those add-ons so that they are readily available to everyone. Gone are the days of scouring the forums for the latest skins, plugins, etc.

The time has come for authors to begin submitting their add-ons. The process is new to us as well, so we expect some bumps in the road, but the method is outlined here. For those who were waiting on final xml specs, they can be seen here. We ask that all add-on authors subscribe to the mailing list described in that guide (don’t forget to create a nice mail filter), where you may submit add-ons and patches, as well as hold discussions. A mailing list was chosen rather than Trac because we feel the need for more discussion, and the ability for devs to send out messages to everyone at once. We expect that activity will be quite feverish (and maybe a bit hectic) at first, but it should settle as a consistent work-flow is established.
